My usual fare currently consists almost entirely of Crawl, and the previous ones weren't any better. And compared to that, this game is incredibly friendly - as in, not trying to constantly kill you and make you lose everything you've been striving so long and hard for. It only does that sometimes. :P

The only other MUD I've played recently was HellMOO, and while unforgiving in different ways its also not terrible gentle, comparatively.

Also, I've written a character concept, and I'm so fucking tempted to submit it, but I need to say NO. Fight the ADDICTION. Bluh! I have things to draw and instruments to play, and I /know/ this game won't give me excuses to do either of those, and thus is a total waste of time I need to avoid, but it is just so tempting.

You may as well give in.  Crackageddon does not let go once the urge sets in :D

I signed up and I started up a warrior character in Allanak, after having looked through the information fairly carefully. It was... interesting, I guess. I didn't really do much - mostly I just wandered around the bazaar and equipped myself, with most of the time spent looking for a belt to sheath my weapons in. Eventually I found one but not until I had wandered for hours in game. Still, I've really only played around for two RL hours or so. Hopefully I'll find something interesting to do tomorrow, and maybe actually interact with people.

I logged in for the first time, walked around some small town and didnt see anyone who I thought might be a human player, then was killed by an elf in an alley. I kinda felt like I had nothing to do, and nothing is really drawing me back in. How many people actually play this? Seemed pretty empty to me.

Oh, yeah, you should probably make a character in either Allanak or Tuluk. All the other cities do have their fun moments, but those two are where all the action happens. Labyrinth is basically a free for all PK zone (with a lot of interesting RP around surviving that). Luir's is a trading city, but you'll rarely see traders because of the outdoor hazards. Red Storm is just really hardcore. You'll rarely find people there, often freaks and spice (drug) dealers.

Seeing how you just got randomly ganked by an elf in an alley, I'm guessing you either went to Labyrinth or Red Storm. Random killing is shunned upon in Arm... the threat of death or murder is often very real, but most people use it as a last resort out of OOC sympathy. It varies though.. but even if you do get randomly attacked by a player in the 'rinth, they'll usually avoid a killing blow if possible and just take all your stuff.

If you want to interact with people, sit around in the main taverns. They'll usually be able to identify a newbie from your boots :P

I am in Red Storm, i guess it would have been helpful if I knew that place was pretty much empty. Can I get somewhere better r is this character just doomed? I am willing to give the game another chance, but not f my experience is as dull as the last one will I try again.

Try Allanak if you like dealing with upfront rough characters and dicks.
Or go to Tuluk if you like nice people who'll smile and then stab you in the back or take your wallet when you're not looking.

Also note that the game is kinda barren during off peak times (and the kind of people who actually play off peak will try to avoid others), but is buzzing during peak time. Peak times have > 50 people on if you do a 'who'.

Alright then, cool. I logged in and was locked outside the gate of that town, in a sandstorm. So I couldnt see really and I wandered around until i hit the road of red silt. I wandered down that until I passed out from exhaustion. I logged out because I am currently sleeping in a horrible sand storm, somewhere just off that road. I guess I got a good 10 minutes out of it. Maybe tomorrow I can log in and find a town, we shall see.

When people say this game is hardcore, they aint kidding. You gotta be hardcore patient to find the fun if you make the wrong decision when you start.

Oh, another tip: This is definitely not a single player game. Don't hunt alone, don't rob people by yourself, don't even leave the gates alone. If you want to travel between cities, get an escort or some gith/gortok/mekillot/spiders will eat your face off, or you'll end up running off a cliff. Pretty much 70% of my character deaths were outdoors, and 100% of them were going solo against others.

This is probably why the game is such a time sink, you need to develop relationships with other characters, and find the right friends to move your goals forward.

If you can, just look at the boards in the tavern, and contact clans that fit your character. Everyone highly suggests joining T'zai Byn because they're designed towards newbies, but they're not the only newbie experience you get. Salarr and Kurac are probably more interesting clans, but more hazardous.

If you do want to play a loner, try a ranger, and get a mount. Don't go far from the gates without a mount; mounts are so important that I almost always reserve starter money to buy one in case I have to travel. The lands around Tuluk are far more forgiving than the southern lands, because you can actually forage for food/water out there as a ranger. And rangers have a bunch of exclusive skills which make them extremely employable.

I'd be surprised if your character does wake up by the time you log on; sleeping in the desert is a good way to die.

It might be worth hanging around in the Gaj (the tavern Allanaki characters start in) for a bit.  That place generally sees quite a lot of traffic, especially at night.  Don't be afraid to approach people ingame (at least in public places), a lot of players will go out of their way to show a newbie the ropes.

I am in Red Storm, i guess it would have been helpful if I knew that place was pretty much empty. Can I get somewhere better r is this character just doomed? I am willing to give the game another chance, but not f my experience is as dull as the last one will I try again.

It might be possible for you to make it to Allanak, but I don't really fancy your chances.  Be sure to bring food and a LOT of water.  A mount would be very helpful too.

Although your character is probably dead now.  Logging out outside of a 'quit' room leaves your character standing around (or sleeping in this case) like a lemon.  Then again you're probably better of if they did die, it'll mean you can try starting up in a more populated area.  Better dead than Red, right?

This.  If you're a ranger, you can quit in wilderness rooms by typing 'quit.'  Otherwise, you have to go to a room that has QUIT next to the room name, and type 'quit.'

If you just close the client, your character will be left standing there.

So then what's the validity of a ranger just living in the wilderness full time?

Very possible once you've got forage skills up a bit and learn where all the cliffs are. Which is probably one of the more fun bits about playing a ranger. Though ranger (well all non-warrior) attack skills kinda suck early on, so you'll likely die to a creature.

Living in the wilderness full time is also a fun idea if you're a rebel or raider :P

Well I woke up in the desert, not dead. I wandered a bit and found the road again. realizing my water was going to run out, I made my way back to town after fighting a beetle (and fleeing) and finally the Storms Eye Tavern. No live players I think.

I wandered around town, bought lots of cakes, a scimitar, and some empty waterskins. Cant find a place to fill those yet. I am emoting around town but nobody seems to be a living person, just NPCs I think.

I hope to be able to make the trip across the desert, if only I knew which way to walk down the road. Kinda weird because I should be able to ask any NPC but I cant cuz the game doesnt work that way.

You can try and "wish" for help, if you want an imm to animate a NPC so you could talk to them.

Sit around in the tavern for a while, maybe someone will show up. If this is your regular log in time, I think you're probably an off peak player.
