Carving a Mountain Peak Into a Tower
« on: April 16, 2012, 11:45:19 pm »

Has anyone done this legitimately without embark anywhere?

I've been tweaking with slightly patchwork worldgens to try and manage but its been really rough going. I generally only get one or two suitably reachable mountain peaks, and half the time they have no vegetation or water.

The few times I do manage to get a usable site it there is no usable metal and I end up failing to goblins before I can get much more then the initial interior staircase carved from the mountain top to 'ground' level...

I'm trying to pull this off in as close to baseline vanilla dwarf fortress as I can...

Any advice?

My last fortress (admittedly overrun by Daleks, so non-vanilla) was 4x4 and contained a 30-z mountain peak with a brook running past. I had flux stone and galena, but unfortunately no iron ores. It's possible - definitely possible. As to advice... turn off invaders in the init files (still vanilla, technically - no modded raws). That'll help with the goblins, and then you wouldn't need the metals in the first place.

As long as there is an embark-able area touching the mountain peak you'll be able to embark there. Chances are your wagon will be destroyed on the mountainside if it's really steep, so don't count on salvaging the wagon logs. I had this happen in my current embark. 3/4 of the map is a 50z+ mountain, and the other 1/4 is a flat plains. I was able to embark there because I had the flat plains.

My wagon was midway up the mountain, or the wagon would have been if it wasn't instantly destroyed and the items inside scattered nearby. The mountain was also completely dead-raising and had various zombies on it from the start. I'm building my own mountain-tower in the plains area, and will level the evil mountain eventually to do it. The only thing lacking is lignite/coal, but cavern trees can make up for that.

Finding a lonely mountain and carving a tower out of it is pretty simple.

However, if you're looking for a ^ that's not inhospitable then it's not going to happen. The peak will always be a mountain biome. You're basically looking for trees and water on or near this:

Found one  :D

To be fair I had to make a slightly patchwork world and the only suitable spot was literally in the hellish heat of the farthest northern north mountain range (north is hot on this world).

about 118 z levels from the 'ground' to the highest peak in the range...

so not quite a FULL fledged maximum height mountain... unless I'm a few hundred over 'zero' which might be true.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm however going to start with a smaller 'keep' midway down the slopes and then expand back up over the mountain.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ya the wagon almost never survives on the slopes...

Best part is I've got WOODLAND at the foothills and despite being in the hellish fiery north the eleveation has apparently blessed me with pools that have not evaporated over the summer!

I'm thinking of going for something like this:

What say you forumites... should I spin up a thread showing how badly I fail at this?

Holy carp... You're trying to make Minas Tirith? I wish you luck, good sir... You'll likely need it (this coming from someone who's attempted it before). Glad you found an appropriate embark - I had no idea just how tall of a mountain you were wanting. (And +1 for keeping invaders on. ;) )

EDIT:

The very fact you're attempting it is an anti-fail in itself. Updates would be awesome.

Thank you... I shall be experimenting with danger rooms for the first time on this one because so far goblins have claimed all my previous tower carving attempts (when starvation/sobriety did not set in the first year).

And I don't remember but I'm pretty sure there is just about nothing of value actually IN the peak... just the fact that the peak was accessible is what has drawn my dwarves... they will make this a capital fit for the mountain homes...

But importing metal, armor and weapons is gonna be a must.

Oh there is also a necromancer's tower not to far from my embark... so that will be interesting...

What I really think you should do is make a copy of the save with parameters and then point out where in the world this magnificent location can be found in the world. I know quite a few people out there (possibly including myself) who would love to see some nice solitary yet incredibly tall mountains to embark on.

I didn't modify off the base by very much and there are no raws modifications.

The mountain I embarked on is at the far north east... then go west until you spot the mountain chain with a necromancer tower.

After that edge along the farthest northern border until you spot the Mountain peak on the edge of the world.

To reach the peak I had to embark a 5 high 3 wide embark. but I double checked to make sure it was the highest one in the range by embarking much larger first to get a lay of the land.

I love gigantic mountain embarks, is there steel and flux? Also you are a great man dorf for attempting to recreate minas tirith in df. Also, it may be very.. VERY annoying, but why not wall off certain sections of your embark as you work on it, then just remove the wall and work your way down. Its worth the extra effort to keep out the goblins. Any who.. I wish you luck

No metal if I recall, might have some flux...

Its imports all the way... Thanks for the luck I'll need it...

Sad days!

Game crash while I was trying to get you guys screen shots...

I'd gotten the start of the first dormitories structure done and had finished my danger room (even with just ONE spear that thing trains FAST)

unfortunately the danger room might also have been very nearly the death of my fort...

Inexplicably my Expedition leader managed to get himself impaled by accident.

This resulted in badness because EVERYONE loved the expedition leader.

There was also a were armadillo but I think it only killed a metal worker...

I'll have to start over from near scratch again... But I suppose its just as well...

You seem to be having one hell of a time with this embark idea of yours. Well when you finally achieve your goal it will be that much sweeter

Okay so I found out how the expedition leader died in the danger room.

He took a nap >.<

I only discovered this because I noticed another one of them doing it!

Well I got a few axelords out of it...

Will have to wait until I have full lodgings before turning back on the danger room to full power.

ALSO HOORAY I had saved much more recently then I thought so no need to redo a lot of work!

Pictures!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think I'll pull through but I'm worried, I just missed a dwarven caravan and I REALLY needed that shipment of armor...

Hopefully I don't get any goblins for another year or so (currently year 2)
