Man, getting the repairer makes this game actually playable.
My Sword of the Zephyr is the best thing ever, it may suck at hitting things (= unenchanted iron sword) but I use it constantly to get around faster and to vault myself out of my chasm. Of course I've died from my sword more than from anything else, but still.
Finding a Pickaxe of the Core in a chest like ten minutes into this current world made life a lot more bearable, of course it needs the repairer to be worthwhile.
I use the duplicator on lilypads, of all things.
I'm only now starting to get hardly any of the upgrades, so of course my taint levels are super high. I'm wondering if I could purge it by creating a forced loop through a purifier, that wacky thing you make out of like a whole silverwood tree:
- Use an upgraded valve to suck only taint into the loop
- Use a pump or two to force it to keep going around
- Put a purifier in, so a little taint gets erased from existence each time through
- Profit?
My sugar farm is not nearly big enough at the moment, though. I'm thinking that I might pursue a giant piston-based farm instead.
Also, it seems like my arcane bore doesn't harvest enough minerals to pay for its own keep...even at depth=15, I don't think I've ever seen it pick up any redstone or lapis or diamonds in like five full charges. Thankfully they are cheap, but still!
About the repair problem, I went around it by keeping 2 sets of tools and once a tool is almost broken, i put it in my Equivalent Exchange alchemical bag that has a talisman of repair. It's kinda cheating but if i didnt do that i would be pulling my hairs way too much.
I think the purifier is more like an upgraded filter, so i think it still spews taint in the aura, however if it works like the filter, you may be able to stack several of them to destroy more of the taint. However if you want to cleanse your aura, you'll need a condenser upgraded with Concentrated Evil (and stabilized singularity for efficiency), and put tainted crystals in it (they get destroyed in the process), which will allow you to draw taint from the atmosphere. But instead of destroying it, what i do is i store it in thaumium tanks for later use in my dark infuser since it needs both vis and taint. Also, make lots of totems of dawn and you should definitely see a difference in your local aura.
About sugar canes, my own farm is a very simple design with 1 row of reeds, 1 row of water (with stone slabs on top), 2 rows of reeds, 1 row of water, 2 rows of reeds, etc...ending with one row of reeds. I made it on top of an existing shallow water body, filling it with dirt and sand from my work in the area. It really wasnt much work (definitely less work than an automated farm) and i can get over 12 stacks of sugar canes everytime i harvest it. That was enough to feed my research and vis tanks after that.
One thing that definitely helped my research efforts was finding a dungeon (i think it was a vanilla dungeon since it had an Ender portal). I found many chests filled with artifacts in there, and also a huge library (basically filling my inventory with book stacks, good thing i had an alchemical bag).
At first i didnt think that it was going to be useful since i had already researched everything in the lost and forbidden knowledge branches, but then i realised that i could use the artifacts to boost my research success on tortuous theories in other branches (some of the top tier theories seem to have a really high chance to appear as tortous, like the void bracelet and purifier). That and getting as many brains in jars as i could (they are REALLY good-but REALLY a pain in the ass to farm), allowed me to complete the whole tech tree. In fact, brains in a jar are so good that they allowed me to generate plenty of fragments of knowledge of all types from a handful of lost knowledge fragments as soon as i started to lose less fragments than i was generating.
About the Arcane Bore, i found it too much of a hassle to use (replacing the focus all the time), and it's probably much less efficient than just using the pickaxe of the core and it's wisp at low depths.
