It takes me way too long to gen and my specs are:

AMD Phenom 1090T (Six-core at 3,25 gHz)
8 Gbytes of Kingston DDR3 RAM (at 1336 mHz)
Windows 7 Ultimate
And ofcourse the most important thing DF needs:
nVidia 9800gtx (512mb DDR3 baby)

It takes me about 1 and a half hours to gen a large world at 1050 years old.

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

I htink part of this may have been mental, people reading about how hard world gen is, and then stopping around 300 or 400 for fear of the game crashing, when it now seems it wasn't as much an issue.

I am curious, for those now genning 1050 worlds, to star posting some screenshots, would be interesting to see how the similar settings are creating different worlds.

I'm downloading the OP world now, that evil mountain in the middle looks completely amazing.  Going to trawl through it in Legends mode for a bit, see what kind of wars there have been, what age it is, civ placement, etc.

I don't think it matters much in terms of whether or not a world is going to finish generating. As far as I am aware the rejections only occur when the world map has trouble placing geological features, too many megabeasts die out, or dwarves are extinct.

dead megabeasts causes the world to change age, completely extinct dwarves means adventure/legends only (according to the wiki)

personally I have problems when I try to change to many settings at once when trying to gen a world.  I find that it works best to change 1 or two settings at a time and see how it works out.  I wonder how many of these issues with world gen relate to the actual settings used for generation.  I have a feeling if we could check that some how, we would see that lots of the problems are related to this.

I think the problem is civs keeping track of 40 Civs with 1000+ people each is going to slow it down.

Mine crashed in year 464 after about 90 mins. 25 rejects. Apparently using 645mb memory at the time. Not a particularly up to date machine, 2GB ram - maybe I should have shut some other windows before running it - retry overnight

So in light of this thread, I've been doing some testing on my own.

So far I have successfully been able to gen 3 worlds up to year 1050 (taking about an hour a piece) on my quad-core i7 MacBook Pro if I use the "Gen New World" option and set everything to high.

So far I have had three crashes at various years over about 600-700 if I use advanced parameters, large region, and change the settings to my liking.  (Upping number of volcanoes, mucking around with cavern settings, etc.)

Has anyone been able to successfully gen a large region using advanced parameters up to year 1050?  Or is everyone going into the basic "Create World" mode?

Intel Core i5-2500k.
8GB RAM.
Weird, those specs look like mine.
the ram wont matter tough, since it doesnt 1gb for you.

I get random world gen crashes as well.  The longer the gen, the more likely to crash.  So i stick to 200-300 year gens to save time and the bother.

This gaming machine is running a Phenom II 965 BE, 4 cores at 3.4ghz each and water cooled.  6gb ram 1333mhz (occasionally 1600 with different timings).  Win7ultimate 64bit (it was free swag at a conference!).

I don't think anyone should feel bad about crashes.  I highly doubt it is their computer.  For !!science!!, let's find the gen parameters to induce a crash and find out what machines it dies on and which it doesn't.  Could be OS, 32 or 64 bit version of the OS, ram amounts, processor type, or anything else.  I'll start by gen'ing short worlds until one crashes then attempt to duplicate the crash.

Ok guys/gals, i have one.  Add this into your df->data->init->world_gen.txt file:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Memory usage was 1.6gB at the end of genning but i caught a frame where it shot up over 1.8gB when it was finalizing.  My guess is it went over the 2gB mark shortly after and then crashed.  Screeny here:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is only a 300 year gen in v34.07 (zero mods and no graphics) too.  Can others confirm the crash and what their computer specs/OS are?  Might take 20-40 min to gen, depending on the computer.  My guess is there was a lot of stuff going on and gen length might be immaterial to whether or not it crashes.

Confirmed. Whatever you're trying to do with this world it's using far too much RAM and crashes. With normal world gens I never even got halfway.

Most game worlds take years of artists and programmers working long hours to get a reasonable stable world.  It then takes the programmers several more months to create and program inhabitants for it.  Dwarf Fortress spits out a wholly unique and inhabited world in a few hours.

To be fair, the processes that generated that world have taken nearly half a decade (?) to be coded. On the other hand, they now produce a functionally infinite amount of such worlds (although to get 1000 year worlds is no easy feat)
