Armok protect me for I have Genned a MONSTER!
« on: March 29, 2012, 06:58:06 pm »

So people keep talking about how hard or how troubling it is making HUGE maps for the full 1050 year history.
And it is true! Virtually every time I have tried to gen one of my own, the game usually crashes around the year 900 or so when it is taking over 4 to 5min for a single year to pass.

Well last night I decided to give it one more try... And this morning...
IT LIVESSSS!!!!

1050 years of history
191,000 Historical figures
2700 Historical sites
4500 Artifacts

And in the center of this world?
A mountain range of PURE EVIL!!!

Already there is so much potential awesome here.  I wanted to load the map before experimenting with a single fort... But looking at some sites,
I have found a Volcano, on a Glacial with 30 zlevel mountains around it!
There are a few other Mega Mountains where the zlevels go from 2 or 3, to suddenly 40 or more!
There are Necromancer Towers EVERYWHERE! I swear I have counted over 20 so far!

There are also some MASSIVE towns! Several that started on year ONE and are still going a Thousand years later:

This region is a real MONSTER

I would find it hilarious if you had to re-gen because all dwarf civs were dead.

So far Six active Dwarf Civs, they RULE the lower half of the world, and a few in the upper parts, HUGE Mountain halls stretch across the hills (Sadly in name only since they don't exist in game yet)

Several of the Human towns have Dwarf rulers also.
It's looking epic.

I have to admit, this thread perplexed me somewhat. I had no idea that there were problems with World Generation on huge maps and long histories, but then I always generate small worlds with hundred year histories.

So, for the sake of sating my curiosity I fired up Dwarf Fortress and told it to generate a huge world with a 1050 year history. It only took me 40 minutes, less time than it took me to listen to Bad Religion’s ‘The New America’.

Seems to be working fine to me.

You listen to bad religion.
I love you, sir or ma'am as the case may be.

It is difficult now.  To explain shortly: worldgen is becoming massive, and is done in RAM.  Once the size of a world hits 2GB, then it crashes.  If you're using the Large Address Awareness tweak, then it's 4GB on 64bit.  Either way, there is a physical limit where the game runs out of space and just stack heap explodes.  In addition, due to the vast amount of stuff in the world, it's much slower.

If you genned huge long worlds in .25, try again.  The newest batch of releases makes big worldgen a lot more difficult.

That I merely listen to them is an understatement. Rarely a moment goes by where the sweet sounds of Bad Religion are not playing through my speakers or headphones. And I have ever single album, right from 'How Could Hell Be Any Worse?' through to 'The Dissent of Man'. Every last one. Greg Graffin is the only man I'll ever love. Well, maybe Greg, Hannibal and Shakespeare.

If you genned huge long worlds in .25, try again.  The newest batch of releases makes big worldgen a lot more difficult.

I genned the world in question, which only took 40 minutes, about 5 minutes after the OP went up. 34.06.
And I figured that the problem could have been related to RAM, so I kept a close eye on it as the world generated. At no point did it even get halfway towards crashing, so I'm still stuck wondering where the problem stems from.

No mods, of course, it would all be completely invalid if I was using any mods, and I don't have the Large Address Awareness tweak, although I probably should.

Ah well, I suppose I could always volunteer to gen worlds for people if they were absolutely desperate. I don't see the need for it though.

I think this world may have a certain "sweet spot" where all the parameters line up right and gen a smooth world.

I could always gen more for the sake of ‼SCIENCE‼ if you think it would help?

I suppose if I do that then I may as well upload the resulting worlds so that the people can use them.

I will say this, When I woke up in them morning there where 92 rejected worlds before this.
Not sure if that means anything.

Most game worlds take years of artists and programmers working long hours to get a reasonable stable world.  It then takes the programmers several more months to create and program inhabitants for it.  Dwarf Fortress spits out a wholly unique and inhabited world in a few hours.
