I don't understand why people are  talking about crashes due to too mucch memory being use. Why wouldn't a swap file work?
I know what you mean but it's not about the computer running out of memory.  Normal 32bit programs just can't address more than 2gB ram.

Damn... I can't even save a large world at 4 years. DF just crashes/Windows force-closes it for memory usage.

I'm crippled. :-[

And it is true! Virtually every time I have tried to gen one of my own, the game usually crashes around the year 900 or so when it is taking over 4 to 5min for a single year to pass.
Is it related to RAM use (DF is limited to 2GB). If not, it may be a new bug and reporting to bug tracker may result in bugfixes.

let me see your parameters wich migth be the problems :

Ok guys/gals, i have one.  Add this into your df->data->init->world_gen.txt file:

Memory usage was 1.6gB at the end of genning but i caught a frame where it shot up over 1.8gB when it was finalizing.  My guess is it went over the 2gB mark shortly after and then crashed.  Screeny here:

This is only a 300 year gen in v34.07 (zero mods and no graphics) too.  Can others confirm the crash and what their computer specs/OS are?  Might take 20-40 min to gen, depending on the computer.  My guess is there was a lot of stuff going on and gen length might be immaterial to whether or not it crashes.

Jesus, the two folks who mentioned their PC specs have vastly more-powerful PCs than I and many of the B12ers I know. o_O

I know they're not exactly gaming computers, but they're definitely better than the PC of everyone in my Bay12 skype group.

I've always assumed that DF has crashed when it hits 0 fps on worldgen... I just generated a couple of large/long worlds.. Only took me about an hour per world... *strokes beard*

Megabeasts hardly ever died in 31.25. 10,000 large world was still age of myth.
If you could gen some worlds, though, that would be awesome. Playable humans even more so.

They still don't die to often in this version.  The wolds i've genned (not that many) stay in the age of myth for hundreds of years.  The one time it went into the age of legends, it was back in the 2nd and 3rd age of myth within 5 years, I assume due to minotaur babies.

I can get a 1k year large region world genned in under 10 minutes current edition. I didn't think that was a big thing? Computer is about 4-5 years old. If there are people wanting worlds generated with long history just message me. I guess I can help.

Nice world OP though. The Glacier with volcanoe and cliffs sounds potentially fun.

Nice world OP though. The Glacier with volcanoe and cliffs sounds potentially fun.

The world that it is on has some really incredible spots, Volcano's in the new version seem to, by default, spawn a mountain anywhere from 50 to 60 zlevels no matter where they are. Which means you can get a MASSIVE mountain in the middle of a glacier or a an otherwise flat forrest.

Is it still possible to make a 10,000 year world? I did it once in 31.25, but it took my ultra-pc overnight.

I genned a 10,000 year-old world a few weeks ago on 34.05, another that was about 8,800.  Both were Medium Island.  I'd upload it to DFFD, but it was slightly modded, like playable humans, etc., but was still in the Age of Myth (I always stop worldgen at 50% megabeast deaths... or "megadeths").  That's actually the main thing that keeps my worlds from going long, unless I remember to set the caves high enough for the megabeasts to meet up and make babies.

I could gen some long vanilla worlds for people and upload them, I guess.

Now I know why there are limits to population and site number.

132 years old world, 2798 sites, 96920 historical figures, of whom 82601 are alive...

Every female dragon/hydra/you-name-it-megabeast has several children. This place is stuck in Myth for good.

I have only touched the events of this short-but-awesome history...

2 things stood out already:

A human town founded at year 1. EVERY ruler there meets a bad end. 1st got killed and eaten by hydra, 2nd turned were-lizard, 3rd also dead within 3 years. I suppose they have hard time finding nobles to rule them  :-\

1 peculiar dragon became enemy of every dwarf civilization. (how - No idea...) This one dragon had killlist of 50-or-so dwarfs. all of them in groups of 4 once a year... All in his lair.  ???
"Hey lets grab some axes and go try to kill that dragon!"
One lucky dorf, last of his team I presume, got the killing hit. Became general back home.. (should be king imo)

I can't even begin to think what might happen in a history 10k years old.

Now to hunt some beasties!
