EU3 doesn't like being... smart.

Also, in the quest for French unification, we'll have to destroy france... which exists in Calais. It rebelled from Great Britain sometime in the 1500s.

Looks like it's going to be Bar. Dislodging the Netherlands and Great Britain should be quite difficult.

Are you going to be playing with A House Divided?

Victoria 2 AAR: A World DissimilAAR Prologue: Barroise History
« Reply #34 on: April 08, 2012, 11:30:22 am »

I am indeed. I guess I should probably start. Very well!

Bar has a varied history. Once part of the kingdom of Burgundy during the Hundred Years War, Bar rebelled against them quite successfully. Allying itself with the up-and-coming Netherlands, they proceeded to dismantle Burgundy's European domain, becoming it's new steward.

Bar knows what it has to live up to. 400 years ago, France was mostly unified, with the promise of greater things to come. The success of England in the Hundred Years War extinguished that hope, with England owning Northern France and Normandy, and various petty kingdoms sharing the region of Aquitaine and Gascogne. Now, Bar is in a key position. With the powerful Dutch Empire to the North, and the British Empire looking to reclaim it's lands, while the toothless French Royal Family holds Calais. Numerous kingdoms will need to be pacified, and with the advent of steam power, a land rich in resources needs to be utilized. Will the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Charlemagne succeed?

Chapter 1: A Brazen Barroise Beginning
Bar was in a truly advantageous position. Possessing rich iron and coal deposits in the Franche-Comte region, it was the strongest and largest of the neighboring kingdoms... barring the Dutch Empire. The southern petty kingdoms of Auvergne, Guyenne, Toulouse, and Armagnac were potential targets, yet not worth Barroise attention yet.

Having once possessed ports, lost temporarily to illegitimate kings, the King possessed colonies in Northern Kanata.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The king, Xavier-Francois II, began to plot. he knew the southern kingdoms possessed little military, yet the outright conquest of one of them would bar future expansion. Auvergne, resting on it's laurels in centuries past, was considered a great power by some, despite it's lack of anything significant. Savoy was in a similar position, and Alsace, presumably from it's legendary musicians and writers, was considered one of the greatest powers in Europe. Alençon, meanwhile, had recently declared independence from Great Britain, and had little military to defend itself. It had territory that could be captured, leading to a coastal port and a new connection to the Kanatian colonies.

Within months, despite other nations learning of the... underhanded tactics, the state press had stirred the Barroise public into a fever. Learning of the cruel injustices being performed by Alençon on it's own people, including torture and execution by guillotine, the public pressure to declare war soon bubbled over. Calling it's allies into war, with only Alsace and Savoy, being the traitorous cowards that they are, declining to join, the Barroise forces quickly moved into action.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Alençon, meanwhile, was left to itself. It's allies, fearful of the slaughter to be delivered by the superior force of the liberators, wisely declined to intervene.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The battles which soon unfolded were worthy to be retold over the next century. Barroise Cuirassiers, aided by infantry, flanked and devastated the pithy forces of the enemy at Angers. Reginald Duquesne, Marquis of Besançon, truly knew how to lead his men. He ordered his guns to position themselves on a nearby hill, in order to fire on the enemy easier. He then lured the enemy in with an inferior infantry force, which then held while cavalry and infantry advanced and attacked the enemy. Though more men were lost, Duquesne was still victorious against the enemy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With a major force defeated, the army advanced through enemy territory. Another Barroise force faced off against the enemy, and quickly slaughtered the cowardly enemy, as they feebly tried to defend themselves.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the enemy army having surrendered and dissolved, occupationliberation proceeded without organized resistance.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the occupationglorious freeing of their people complete, Alençon finally accepted the generous peace terms offered by Bar. Access to the Atlantic was gained, with an intact naval base made available.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After terse negotiations with the Royal Treasury, the newly reformed Royal Navy secured funding for 2 Men of War. The Treasurer, a second cousin of the Queen, wasn't the wisest steward, but with massive funds available (often converted to marks in respect to Austria, the Holy Roman Emperor), he had little reason for argument.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

By 1840, the world had already greatly changed. Austria and the Netherlands were truly the two greatest powers, their military and industry nearly equal, which they both used to great effect. The Netherlands reclaimed their former colonies on the western coast of North America from Spain, and Austria had pushed further into Northern Italy, and gaining control of part of southern Italy. Germany remained a hotbed of war, with territory claimed by multiple states, and the soldiers of these states dying for said claims. Whoever had ideas of unification of Germany was truly a fool.

So the great game continues. What will happen next? Will the Republic of Louisiana succeed in North America? Will Ming continue it's reign? No one truly knows for certain.

Frankly, this is one of the most exciting games I've played. With the EU3 port, the world is different from everyone else's. I'm truly playing a unique, one-of-a-kind game. The Great War should be insane.

Chaptre Deux: A Tour of La Cote D'Azur

Europe, 1840. Austria, the wisest Holy Roman Emperor, has expanded their dominion over northern Italian provinces, and Muscovy, with it's powerful military, conquers more land on the plains of the Rus.

Meanwhile, the Royal Navy finally has a ship, named the Alexandre She is captained by the illustrious Raoul de Colombiers, who gained fame serving in the VOC. It is reputed that when Makassari barbarians encircled his ship, he personally loaded the guns, inspiring the men to battle valiantly. Despite facing 4 maneuverable pirate sloops, he won the fight, unflinching when cannonballs whizzed past his head.

Meanwhile, Negotiations in Kanata continued with the natives. Apparently, beads were no longer working with some of the natives and they had been demanding larger trades. As a result, there is now a shortage of playing cards in Nouveau Verdun.

In May, news from the Department in Rhone reported that poverty had been reaching critical levels. Knowing that the public would be unwilling to stand by for much longer, the King listened to his cabinet advisors and ordered a parliamentary investigation.

As the eye of the world had drifted (somewhat) away from bar's foreign policy, Francois decided it wise to attack Auvergne. Auvergne was considered the third greatest power in the world: the Cote d'Azur had long been a desirable home for the nobility of Bar, Guyenne, Armagnac, Auvergne, even the Van Egmonts from the Netherlands and Austria. Therefore, it was decided to humiliate Auvergne in the best way possible: force Auvergne to burn the Auvergnaise and their allies vacation houses down. Barroise press decided to cover this up by suggesting that Auvergne's King happened to enjoy spending time in the parlor gossiping with the women over going out in the forest hunting with the men.

Across the Atlantic, the Dutch and the Spanish rushed to claim the great plains of North America. While Spain seemed to be taking the western territories with ease, the Netherlands was taking the cattle-rich eastern provinces.

On August 1st, Bar struck. In a week, Barroise forces moved by railroad and were attacking Marseille, Auvergne's capital province.

Led by courageous general Renaud D'Ailly, Barroise forces were outnumbered and assaulting a fort that was designed during the 3 Year War between the Netherlands and Austria. Foolishly, the enemy general sallied forth and attacked. Brilliantly, D'Ailly withdrew his forces. The enemy general, not seeing the plan being set in motion, pursued. D'Ailly then assaulted the enemy forces with his cavalry and main infantry force. Though suffering losses, D'Ailly inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, and they were forced to retreat.

In a brilliant maneuver, Henri d'Ambleteuse encircled 6000 infantrymen with his massive cavalry force. He lost few brave soldiers to the complete Auvergnaise destruction. d'Ambleteuse has been recommended for a Viscountcy position.

In late October, the last natives finally died from a cold snap reached an agreement with Barroise diplomats. Bar was in full control of the territory, which they would put to good use.

In November, a potato blight broke out. Thinking that they only grew grain in Verdun, the King dismissed such claims, saying that such poppycock would not be stood for. The messenger has since been executed.

By 1842, there seemed to be guaranteed victory for the Barroise. Would the removal of one great power allow for another to rise? Will France ever reunify, or will the Netherlands hold Paris for the rest of time?

NOTE: I've played til 1844, but it's late and I want to get an update up but I don't have enough motivation/energy to continue to that. You'll find out everything I know tomorrow. Or the day after. updates may or may not be more or less sparse as school starts again tomorrow. Thank god there's only two months left of it.

Auvergne, that tiny country, is the third most powerful in the world? I would have thought the British Empire could crush that tiny thing. Or Ming. Or hell, maybe Urbino.

Is it that tiny green strip on the bottom of Europe? The one with Marseilles? It must have HUGE colonies to be more powerful than Great Britain or Ming.
