Cthulhu, I gotta say, I saw that post soon after you posted it and I had just been thinking, "Man, I wish Cthulhu would bust into this thread and dole out some real metal for a change," and then I checked Bay12 and BAM! There you were! You did it! It was amazing, I tell you.

Now, anyway, that said, what reminded me to come into this thread this evening was a very specific thing indeed.
Very specific; a mission, even. A mission for all you delightful cosmonauts and cultists.

Put on some Black Sabbath, turn up the volume, throw on your cloaks and follow me... over here.

Fakeedit: Damn, Cthulhu, I haven't heard that track for a while, not one of my more listened-to tracks, but DAMN! It is perfect right now! Cheers.

Yoink, metal's just punk that wanted to be edgy and loud without actually needing to think about what their songs meant.  :P

Aaaand there it is. Punk was inherently defined by its nature as a reaction to mainstream rock n' roll (and, often, as a vehicle for anti-authoritarian, anti-consumerist, and anti-ignorance messages), metal was inherently defined by its auditory qualities. That's always been the difference, punk is as much about thinking as it is about feeling. Doesn't make either better than the other, just different. But nice try.

The moronic political lyrics are the worst thing about punk.
A metal song about killing everyone presents a far more reasonable viewpoint than some punk song calling for world peace.

I know I'd much rather listen to a poetic description of ultraviolent acts and/or alcohol abuse than some asshat whining something generic about the gub'mint and "smashing the system", most likely before chucking on a button-up shirt and heading back to their job the next day. A lot of punk music sounds good, but the lyrics often spoil it.
Still a few punk bands around that I enjoy listening to, though. Clowns are one that manage to be pissed off without just sounding whiny.
That reminds me, I need to grab a ticket to their show with The Bennies in the not-too-distant future...

Anyway, back on topic: I just ordered this tape, pretty keen to get my hands on that. Also I'm about to buy a ticket to an amazing two days of music next weekend... that's going to be awesome; blackened death/war metal on one night, a variety of crushing doom the next.
I'm not going to have enough money to do much else this fortnight, but who cares.

New, fresh and sludgy!

Already knew and liked both bands, but I had no idea this was happening until it came out a couple of days ago. Nice surprise!
They're certainly an odd couple, about as different as two sludge bands can get.

REAL METAL
No no, no, ABSOLUTE METAL!
(I may have linked that album in here before, not sure. If I haven't, well, I should have; it's bloody brilliant.)

Earthside. Just accidentally found this band. Not sure how the hell I managed to miss them. The melodics are amazing, the vocals incredible, and I found a god damn orchestral version with the singer from Sevendust. WAT.

And a Gojira song about my grandfather's bastard Portuguese royal family name.  We've been bastards for like 100 years now. I'm pretty sure if you go back far enough, everyone's got some blue in 'em. Hell, most asians are descended from intermingled blood of Attila the Hun's line - he's royalty by nomadic standards.

Edit: Derp forgot link.

Silvera is the track I'm talking about.

This thread really hasn't been seeing enough use! Glad someone posted in it.

Church of Disgust - Dread Ritual
Really great, slow and nasty old-school death metal. Found them whilst looking through various bands that an Australian band (not one I like) played with on their recent US tour. Found a few good bands I didn't know, so it worked pretty well.

Weregoat (live set)
Badass blackened/bestial death metal. Their albums and other recordings are great too, but this was the first I saw of them and it got me hooked.
I plan on buying some of their music in the near future for sure. One of my new favourite bands!

Mar Mortuum - Tomb (EP)
Excellent Australian black metal, this is a release I'd been looking forward to for a while. Shame it's a bit short, but it's only five bucks.

Captain Cleanoff - Rising Terror (album)
Finally, here's one of my favourite releases from last year. Probably the best grindcore band I've ever heard, and they're Australian!
Still a great listen after probably a few hundred plays at least.

TBH though if a metal band takes itself too seriously I have trouble doing so.

Unrelated, mostly. Keldian - Sundancer.
