Vampires not respecting burrows?
« on: February 23, 2012, 05:16:49 pm »

I have three vampires in my fort.  They are draining dorfs left and right.  I know who they are, and they have been convicted of murder, although received no punishment.  (Stupid useless justice system...)  I've assigned them each to a burrow, where I plan to wall them in, however they are ignoring my burrow restrictions and roaming freely through the dorms, sucking the blood out of important dorfs.

Are vampires supposed to obey burrows?

Yes they should.  But it's buggy.   You may have to recruit them and station them there and then boot the evil sons of a bitches out in order to get them into the burrow.

Also, don't wall them in.  Atom smash them, or you may get them as migrants to your next fort if they survive the inevitable fall of this one.

Do you have a hammerer, or are you relying on your guard captain / sheriff to do the beating?  I think you'll need a hammerer to deal with him.  He might survive the hammering anyway though.

As for the burrow, as usual it can be trying to get a dwarf to go there.  I haven't tried a vampire yet, although I don't know why they would work any differently than a regular dwarf.  The station method is probably the easiest way, but if you've got a job they're likely to respond to in the burrow that might lure them inside.

Only one vampire can be assigned to one burrow at a time. It's a bit odd really.

I tried setting up separate burrows for each vampire, they still didn't bite.  (see what I did there....)  I had had them walled in, mainly by sheer luck I suppose, but opened up the walls because one of them is my mayor and the stupid liason keeps wanting to talk to him.  As soon as I opened up the wall, they shot out like a bat outta hell (see what I did there...) and started snuffing my dorfs.  They just went through over a dozen dorfs in a handful of months, some of them being actually useful ones.   >:(

The trick of recruiting them, stationing them, then dumping them from the squad has worked.  I hadn't thought of doing that for some reason.

HOLD IT!

Do surviving dwarves from an earlier fortress show up as immigrants in later ones?

I believe that atom smashing vampires is a bad idea due to the fact that they use fake names when they arrive as immigrants so if they come back as a ghost you won't be able to memorialize them; so you would need a body to cram in a coffin to get rid of the ghost.

From what I've been reading, and the limited personal experience with fort vampires (my Chief Medical Vampire), you may be getting fatalities because they don't have a ready supply of sleeping blood bags to feed from.  I remember someone posted that vamps will respect burrows (or station orders) until they get thirsty, then they will go find a "meal" and return to their designated location.

How do they choose victims? Can I protect my valuable dwarves by having the vampires sleep behind the common dormatory and the hospital?

When I try to assign them to burrows they just stand still until I undo it, putting them in squads and ordering them somewhere works thought.
Also, since vampires will never starve or thirst to death AFAIK and if atom smashing creates a ghost problem you could do what I do to them which is drop a cave-in on them which kills them outright and leaves a copse to handle.

Try making them friends of vampire, I had vamp burrowed with a bunch of overabundant migrants (worked just fine btw) he killed three during first few months and got one feeding interrupted by me. But now I hadn't get any more corpses in a months and only seen one pale dwarf (not the one I've saved), vamp's relationship screen shows 20 friends which is same as the amount of dwarves locked with him.

I have a single burrow with 3 vamps happily sitting in it. They all obeyed teh burrow order without wrangling as well. Perhaps the 1 per burrow thing is just another facet of them ignoring burrow at times?

I wonder if the amount of blood taken is dependent on the vampire's stats or personality? Toughness seems to help the victim not die, so maybe it affects the vampire as well?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I made the hospital beds a dormitory, with the CMV's room behind that, so he'd idle in his room, get thirsty and walk out to see sleeping dwarves.  I was only on year three and 0.34.02 came out, however, so I don't know if he'd kill anyone with that setup or not.
