Towers/ Necromancers

Does your fortress only get attacked by necromancers if there are towers in your world?

Pretty much.

Similar to how goblins only siege you if they have a dark fortress nearby. If the tower is too far away, no zombie invasions unless you embarked in an evil/terrifying biome.

For maximum pleasure, embark very near a goblin fortress and a necromancer tower.

You need to embark near them, before you embark press Tab until you get to the civ screen, if you are close to a tower it will show up on the list as "tower"

...But Goblins siege you regardless of a Dark Fortress being near by or half way across the wrong side of the world. Would this mean necromancers would too?

Check neighboring civs in embark screens (tab over). Tower will appear in the list. This will vary as you move far away, same as other civs. Look for purple 'I's appearing in worldgen. 200 years is usually sufficient to get 1 or more towers.

You can go to "Artifacts" tab in Legends. All created books are listed there. If there is no "... contains secrets of life and death" - well, no necros in this world.
I have three 250+ years worlds. In two of them there is no necros and there are around 30 books, all created by one deity. In one that has necro there are 139 books.

You have to embark fairly close to a tower for it to be able to attack you. As long as a rival civ is on the same continent, and isn't seperated by mountains, they will be able to reach you for trade or raids, no matter how far they are away.

On the embark site selection screen, tab through the various site information screens to see which civs can interact with your fort, and if towers can attack.

Damn I wish I knew that before I started my fort. Goblins will have to suffice than.

I just made a new fortress and on the civ list at embark were all the normal viva plus "Tower." only the goblins have the at war red line all the others are at peice, does this mean the tower is friendly or are they like kobolds except appear on the civs at embark.

Too far? This is the game where we slaughter the cutest animals we can find by the dozen for a rather meager amount of food. This is the game where coming up with a more complex and cruel way to kill something is a daily goal. This is the game where "child care" is locking a kid in a room with a bunch of rabid animals to scar them, sir, this is not far enough.

You'll get necromancer sieges. Towers don't need the red lines.

Maybe you don't want them.

I got a siege. 3 months later, random body parts of some of the bodies suddenly started to randomly revive themselves. And then spread.
Seems kinda broken.

Sounds like you have a sneaking necromancer, they walk around invisible raising the dead around the place.

Your best bet is to actually dump all of your bodies into an area via chute, but have an entrance to it, with a pressure plate. Once the necromancer walks onto the pressure-plate, he'll shut the door behind you, and bam! Instant zombie-supply chain.

Oh god.
Putting the refuse stockpile next to the trade depot was defiantly not a good idea then...
