You can ride a horse for fun. What are you going to do with a pet cow?
Get your own milk. Not that chemical stuff the governement produces, who knows what they put in it.
It's not the government that pumps chemicals into milk, it's transnational corporations owning farms and milk plants!

Ok... I don't really think that livestock animals would go extinct if they weren't farmed.  People would keep them around.  Domestic cows and sheep can't really survive in the wild, though.  They'd be kept alive the same way many species in zoos are.  Functionally extinct in their native settings, but a small population kept alive for novelty, education, and entertainment.  Assuming we eliminate all other practical reasons for breeding them.

There are places where cows and sheep can survive without humans.

Places devoid of predators, that don't also have herbivorous population explosions taking advantage of the lack of predators and consuming all the vegetation?  :P

If only there were a term used to describe domesticated animals released into the wild that become self sufficient...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral

Feral sheep: Mostly isolated to small patches of land without predators. May well go extinct if not for human support.
Feral cattle: Survive quite well for months or years without human interference, large populations live off the land for extended periods before being rounded up again by humans simply because it's profitable to do so.

Hmm... sheep and cattle are the ones I didn't think would make it.  They've been bred to be fat, delicious, and stupid for so long.  I stand corrected on cattle.

Cattle bred for beef production might survive in the wild. Less sure about cows bred for milking.

And probably nothing that's been raised in a factory farming environment would survive long.

I'm not going to be presumptious enough to hypothesise the advances of the next decade, though i will ask whats currently expected in the next few years, say 3 years from now.

You know, I've been reading The Wheels of Chance lately, and noticing the thread title I think we are already there.
