You know, I've been reading The Wheels of Chance lately, and noticing the thread title I think we are already there.

Yeah; judging by the headlines lately, I definitely have to agree with that. The only thing I'm wondering is how silly/outdated will "sci-fi" get as far as calling existing technology 'science fiction' within the next few years.

Of course they are. After all, who better to make your next clients than medical facilities with multi-million dollar equipment budgets. :P

As Gibson said decades ago already, "The future is already here.  It's just unevenly distributed."

Personally, I think cyberpunk has got just about everything right, minus a certain amount of embellishment that varies by author.

Pertinent to the current discussion:
Scientists transfer brain impulses from one rat to another through internet.

Video explaining the experiment. (NOTE: Do not watch if you don't want to see USB-enabled rats.)

Telepathy won't come from magic or mysticism, but sufficiently advanced technology.

The fun thing is you can still find people going "The golden age is over, all major scientific development has already been done".

Yeah, we still have time travel, resurrection of the dead and reading minds left to discover.

It's out there somewhere.

So... 3d printing on a scale similar to that of cells. Judging by the scale on those images and some wiki info, you could basically put a single cell in each of those little boxes. So think about that. You can now buy 3D printers capable of printing structures smaller than a cell. With a resolution about an order of magnitude smaller than the visible wavelengths of light.

More in printing: flexible electronics printed directly onto the skin.
Quote
What we’ve found is that you don’t even need the elastomer backing,” Rogers says. “You can use a rubber stamp to just deliver the ultrathin mesh electronics directly to the surface of the skin.” The researchers also found that they could use commercially available “spray-on bandage” products to add a thin protective layer and bond the system to the skin in a “very robust way,” he says.
Flakes off after 2 weeks, so it isn't permanent or anything, but still pretty cool.

If that's not sci-fi, I dunno what is. An article about the growing dark-market of zero-day exploits used to create cyberweapons. In short, governments worldwide, including the US, are paying quite a bit of money for knowledge of zero-day exploits.
