Why not release all of our algae eating fish? If everything is a carnivore the aglae eaters will get eaten, causing a massive influx in lesser predators, carrying all the way to the top followed by a massive starvation. Laike anyother ecosystem cycle. Everything will equal out in the end.

Yeah. It wouldn't screw up the ecosystem. That's a thoughtless answer. If anything it would bolster the ecosystem.

You don't understand. If the organism being introduced to eat the algae is hardy enough it could wipe out native species, especially specialists. What we don't want is a cane toad situation on our hands. Or this turning into the old lady who swallowed the fly. Thats why I'm advocating using a local species so that we don't disrupt the food web any more then necessary.

What species would they wipe out? None of them eat algae. We could capture some of the native fish and see if any will feed on our algae eaters. Carnivores aren't particularly picky. I read the cane toad text. That was only a problem because it had no predators in that environment. Let's find some.

We don't have algae eating anything as of yet. But if we manage to find something that will only eat the algae, we don't need to give it a natural predator . The algae eater population would grow so much that it eventually eats all the algae and goes extinct because of starvation.

The only reason I didn't recommend that is because it leaves a 10-20% area gap left to fill with nothing to fill it. My method, (hopefully using what is already there and changing/integrating it in the way we need) will allow a nice population boom and solve our problem without mass extinction being the result.

edit: it will also give the birds some time to adapt to the environment before their predators get there.

New idea for the algae thing: find oil somewhere below the algae infestation (this is an ocean planet full of life, there will almost certainly be some oil down there) drill into the oil reservoir and leave the pipe open (but have a shutoff valve)  If it works anything like the recent Gulf of Mexico disaster, the oil will pour out and spread out across the surface.  We then shut off the oil spill and light the oil on the surface on fire!  Bye bye algae!

Cons: introducing a rather toxic chemical in place of the algae (it should mostly be burned off, but it will still have adverse effects on the ecosystem for some time... assuming there's any ecosystem left in the algaed area) Also, burning millions of tons of oil will produce an awful lot of pollution.
There's only one problem. This would kill of most( but not all) of the algae.  Also we're talking about 10-20%(by the time we're done) of a planets surface. That could take some time. But I think there's something a bit more efficient then oil when it comes with blowing up things. We can try to destabilize oceanic methane clathrate. This is more frequently found that oil and spillls much quickly( It's a gas). We just need to places some flares on the surface and detonate some bombs on the seafloor and the whole thing blows up.  ( Sadly the amount of clalhrates burned might increase temperatures by 0-2 degress.)

Revamped tech list to support current suggestions.

- Tech ( This is just a stuff that might be useful list, sorted vaguely on importance)
     - DNA Sequencing, coding/ decoding installations complete with cloning pods. There seem to be a lot of genetic engineering suggestion. This will make that possible.
     - Deep sea/land drilling Installation and techlogy
-Strong magnetic generators( For magnetic anti rad fields, Microparticle shields bullet deflection, and cloacking ships) ( This magnetic field thingy can also protect against radiation ,so it  might be useful if we're going to nuke the planet.
-Design and build a giant space Telescope( Cheap, also we can use it to look at moons) It should have a modular design. Ie we can use the individual lenses as laser if we want to.
-Continue with the improbable and probably impossible Tesla beam. Also work on Laser point defense systems
-Design electrochemical ammunition for conventional weapons.(Bullets spontanously produces a strong electroshock upon hitting something)
-Work on nuclear fusion. ( We have giant laser lenses, this should be trivial)

Good ideas, if it comes down to that. I still say engineering a local creature to eat the algea is our best bet, incorporate it ionto the food web if nothing eles.

On another note, raising the tempature of aries. Burning fosil fule is a good idea in the short term but we have to be carfule, too much and we poison the air. As for long term things I have a few ideas.

> Lower the albedo, make the planet darker so it absorbs more light.
     >Darker plants? It likly gets less light then earth so it would be a good idea to have darker plants anyway, lets just see what the best color would be based on the amount and wavelengths of light the planet receves.
     >Sea ice at the poles insted of land ice? Land ice is more reflective. Not sure how to do this though.
> Build survay robots. solar powered and self repairing, send them out to serch for fault lines and volcanos. We whant to start up volcanisum and hopefuly tectonics asap.
The atmosphere is right yet either. I think we currently still have underpressure. Also, water vapour is a greenhouse gas. ( Expect when it forms clouds, then it just reflects sunlight.) Also , we don't nessecerally need to start up volcanism and such, it'll naturally start when the oceans turn liquid. We just want to make sure we didn't build the colony on a future volcano and such.

Well, how we can increase pressure?

Release more gas into the atmosphere. Kinda simple actually.

Thats what i'm woryed about. Thats why I sugested we throw meteorites at it, add mass. Though anything big enough to afect the mass to much might be dangorus. any way i think he said that it was about massive enough.

Sure, some of it will leak away. Atmospheres leak very slowly however( 1000-10000 years or longer) so we don't need to worry about that. However the problem( and fun thing) about terraforming is that everything is connected. Ie Raising the pressure will increase temperatures.( More gas= More greenhouse gasses) which will allow liquid water which will melt ice( Or frozen CoČ) which will increase the pressure and so on . The trick is to find the right part of the system and apply a gentle force on it, and then have the planet terraform itself( Just some steering required).

Well, when it leaks so slow, we should calculate how much "help" the planet needs for a healthy atmossphere  :P

We don't have a ship filled with every animal that lived on earth? Because I seem to remember some algae eating fish that live in the ocean. And if there are carnivores they will eat them. Both problems solved. I don't understand why it is so scary. Just look at the cycle of predators and producers. It will definately not mess up the ecosystem.
