Fort Internal Security - Vampire outbreak
« on: February 17, 2012, 05:29:27 pm »

Hello guys,

I'm having quite some concern about fro internal security with the arrival of vampires. I don't think individual bedrooms are a good idea anymore since nobody can wittiness a crime there.

Removing all the door could solve this problem, but I'm pretty sure this could cause some bad feeling due to noise and crowding...

Somebody got a nice solution so far? I'm keeping away from vampire detection bugs and other tricks. I would really like my internal fort security to handle itself alone.

simple one: have your millita in groupes of 2 patrol all the bedroom corridors were the side of the room in the hall is made out of green glass windows.

Youll have !!FUN!! and an anti vamp security system.

I also just read that fortification can be seen through, making cheap window for vampire safety for starting fortress

Yeah, this works and I did this even before vampires were in the game. I started carving fortifications in workshop rooms so I could lock the door on moody dwarves who could then be safely shot to death by marksdwarves.

I then extended it to bedrooms and other places. It also helps for exploring the fort in adventure mode.

I think there might be a way to use the "defend burrow" squad setting; when an enemy enters a burrow the whole squad is apparently alerted somehow or other (the wiki isn't sure if this is limited to a squad-member's line of sight), so wouldn't a dwarf being attacked cause the vampire to flag up as an enemy?

*Fingers crossed* I really hope so!

No, apparently nobody will intervene in a vampire feeding, but they will witness it and it will show up on the justice menu.

Not much you can do about the bloodless guy, but at least you'll have identified the vampire for execution.

Hmmm. Does the dwarf being targeted attempt to fight the vampire off? I might have to fully embrace the Swiss approach to conscription instead of having everyone put their weapons and armour away after their stint on sentry duty.

They'll be unconscious, so that's a no.

Just have a bedroom patrol, or open wall designated bedrooms.

Vampires usually only attack sleeping or knocked out dwarves. Some people say they have had vampires attack alert dwarves in crowded meeting halls and the such, I'm not actually sure if the victim fights back or not, or if it's treated like a tantrum where they beat people up but it doesn't turn into a life-or-death fight. I'm guessing they don't fight back, it's handled through the justice system.

There are good reasons to keep everybody armored and armed anyways, though.

For a long time I've exclusively used big dormitory style bedclusters, usually packed into mined-out veins for high room values. This works absolutely fine, dwarves have no problem crawling over each other to get to their bed.

Check out the list of sleep disturbances on the wiki. It's only things like mining, woodcutting, construction and engraving - all of these at quite long distances - and I think eating (but only at very short range). If you make your bedrooms 15-20 tiles away from these noise sources then your dwarves wont have disturbed sleep, even if technically they should due to having no doors and having dwarves crawling over them while they're trying to sleep. But that's how it works, dwarves ain't bothered by communal bedrooms, as long as they own a bed.

And thats all? Dwarves do not need rooms? So no cabinet, container, table and throne... This will make it fairly more easy next game I do...

I'm not sure communal bedrooms are the answer, because sleeping dwarves don't make good witnesses. Also, with so many dwarves packed into a room it'd be very difficult to determine if a vampire is right there attacking somebody. It'd be more obvious if every dwarf had their own room.

Could try something like a meeting hall, with dorms surrounding the central room where everybody is hanging out. That way there would always be witnesses.

Meeting room 5x5 in the middle of a 20x20 open dormitory room?

That'd work. My personal preference would be like a 3 wide meeting hall lined with 2x3 individual bedrooms with fortifications next to the door.

Or some other configuration that involves walls. 5x11 meeting hall connected with 5x3 dorm rooms, with fortifications and doors.

Aesthetics, mostly, but whatever works, works.
