Dr James Smith was in his office looking over the blueprints for the new hull. Konrad had come up with an incredible design that had managed to cut the hull weight by a sixth. Almost made up for the ignominious results of his Thruster-M project, he thought to himself. It was obvious to him now that he should try to improve the engine prototype that was already there rather than try to make a new but not very different type of engine. This would allow the design work and system integration to proceed at full pace while research was being conducted. There was something else Dr Smith had ordered. He had decided that the best way to secure further funding from the US government was to demonstrate ASTRO's capabilities in space flight, and what better way than to put a device in orbit that would literally broadcast the greatness of American spaceflight to the entire Earth? Dr Smith also authorized a research project into two-stage rockets, which was suggested by Konrad as a means of putting payloads into higher orbits than was possible with a single stage rocket.

Research:
  • Dr Smith: improve the reliability of the standard small thruster (not the Small Thruster-M, as that project is on indefinite hold)
  • Lab 1(under Konrad Becker, the German structural engineer): develop a two-stage rocket
  • Lab 2: develop a basic payload with a mass of less than 200 kg. This payload should be able to transmit a signal from LEO that can easily be detected by radio operators on Earth
Research Cost: $2000

Design:
Redstone I
Components:
Single stage hull(8 meters): 62.5*8 : 500kg
Small Thruster(1 meter): 100 kg, 1750kg to LEO
Small fuel tank(7 meters): 875kg fuel
Design Notes:
Height: 8 m
Weight: 1475kg
Launch capacity: 1750kg to LEO
Available Payload: 275kg
Design Cost: $2500-$3000

Construction:
N/A

Other:
N/A

Total cost: $4500-$5000

@ RulerOfnothing:
Design costs are atleast 2000. It's 2000 +Cost of rocket( WHich in your case will lay between 500 and 1000)

Right. Do we have a list of component costs? And do I need to specify what abilities my new two-stage hull has?

I have a list, but you don't. You can give specifics, but otherwise it will just be similair to the normal Single stage hull.( But slightly heavier and higher)

You can join if you want. If you're quick enough I might even edit your turn in.

I'd rather see how everyone would fare here :P

And to not bother the turns anyway. (I like how it's going though).

Dr Faust had definitely improved the thrusters. But a 40% chance is still too high for the Generalissimo to be willing to invest in. We need the chance to be nigh impossible. Ah there he is. Yes Doctor, I got your designs. I like them, but they need to be improved. Yes, improved. It's 40% Doctor. We need lower. His Spanish is getting better. Either that or I'm slowly going mad from his constant German wittering. But yes, we need more funding. So, I must make a declaration! Attract media attention, put Spain in the lime light. He'd like that.

Research:
Dr Faust continues to stabilise the thrusters
Design:
N/A
Launch:
The prototype El Abejorro is launched
Construction:
A second 'El Abejorro' is built
Other:
Alexis gives a statement that a Spanish rocket will reach LEO, and release a radio signal as proof, within five years.
Expenses:
1500 (Construction of El Abejorro+Research)

Also, since you're not a scientist, research cost 1000.(Gained researchers/ designers do not count for free research)

Well, that could have gone worse, Xin Su thought to himself after the failed conference. At least nobody important was injured, and the cable remains undamaged. We'll just make up for that by being the first rocketry program to get something into orbit. I'll just sign these forms here ordering a launch ... Why's that lackey gaping at me?

"Sir, if I may interrupt, the test vehicle isn't ready. It will explode, and we'll be made the laughingstock of the aeronautic community."

"Fine. You have another year, but it will be launched in December regardless. Prepare a second rocket, just in case."

Research:
Lab 1st floor: Further stabilization of Small Thrusters.
Lab 2nd floor: Solid Fuel.

Design & Production
Factory 1: Build a second Flare class test rocket.

Construction
None.

Missions:
Launch the first Flare class test rocket!

Other:
Improve prestige from my own launch.

Total expenses: -$2425

Research cost 1000 for each research project. Note: You can get 1000 dollars at the end of each turn, but you can spend these during your turn if you want to.

How'd I get to 7k a year?  I had 2k - a 150% increase would be 5k.

Urist was pleased with what had happened in the first year.  His media stunt got him tons of attention and a glorious boost in funding, which would be used to fund the research he actually needed to attain the claim he made.  He just now needed to ensure his mission was a success.

The safety upgrades made in his first rocket were enough for him to authorize a launch.  He hoped to be the first...

Research:
Stable Small Thrusters.  Focus on reducing the risk of explosion (while neither decreasing efficiency nor increasing weight.)  (Same as previous- let's get that risk lower.

Life Support Module:  A basic life support module that could accommodate a being up to 50 kg.

Designs:
None.  (Not much point with no new components.)

Building:
Expand the labs again, to allow more research.  None.

Other:
Launch the test rocket!

Total expenses:
2000 (1k research x2)

You got 20 prestige(By bluffing). That resulst in an increase of 5000. The text should have said 250%.
You forgot to put the lab building in your expenses.(Note , a three storeys lab costs 10000)
You can also upgrade it, resulting in a small research buff.

Oh Dangit: Forgot to roll for random events.
