Is framerate always so bad?
« on: January 31, 2011, 02:57:47 pm »

Today(yes, only today) I tried 0.31.18 in dwarf fortress mode and expected it would go faster than older versions, because in adventure mode, it did. I found nice place, chosen moderate equipment and skills for dwarves and embarked. I looked a round a bit, checked units list and started planning my fortress. I designated a long corridor and few temporary storages. And then I unpaused...
My fortress camp experienced frame death right after embarking. With framerate of 10 FPS, I somehow managed to survive until summer, but no longer. I abandoned my fortress camp and went back to old good 0.28.40d and left new version just for adventure mode...

Really, why such carp happens? I already did all ways to increase framerate, but they didn't work for some reason. Any ideas?

If you did everything it says to increase frame rate and it's unplayable. I guess it's just gonna be unplayable until you get a better computer. I know it can run fine, because my computer has no problems at all running it at 100fps nearly constantly. My computers is fairly new though. Whats your usual frame-rate for 40d, it's possible something was glitched on the map.

If it doesn't work with a few more embarks I don't know what to do.

there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

I usually have 100 FPS in 40d on embark, but I can squeeze out 150 FPS with small, flat map with no running water.

I really would like to buy new computer and I have enough money saved, but my parents keep telling me not to buy it because "next year there will be better and cheaper computers". This continues for 3 years already...

Your parents need to understand this simple fact - No matter how long you wait, there will always be a better computer in a month, half a year, two years into the future. Same goes for everything else really.

It all comes down to you buying it now and being happy with it - sure it might not be as good as the one in a year, but if you never get the upgrade it's as moot as a point could be. :-\

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

did you try a 2x3 or 2x2 embark?, also just for fun turn your fps cap to zero, i'm just wondering what numbers it willl get after that, ok thats it for now.  Also are you using a graphic tileset?

It's likely a broken map. For example, I recently embarked on a map with a direct channel from the surface to hfs

I could very well be a glitchy map, as above users have said. Generate a few more worlds and try a few more embarks before you dismiss the new version.

Did you embark near a volcano? Those can cause extreme elevation differences which make your map incredibly tall and incredibly laggy.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Also, the RAM requirements in the new version have roughly doubled; you need at least 1GB now.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

If you generate a world with default parameters, and then embark on an area with any sort of elevation change, there are likely HUNDREDS of Z levels below ground that the game is keeping track of.  This is the #1 cause of FPS death in DF2010.  Personally, I combat this by removing 2 cavern layers and embarking on as flat an area as possible.

I can embark at 100FPS with a 1.2Ghz / 512MB ram netbook and it gets down to 30 eventually and slowly goes down from there.

If you embark at 10FPS, something was definitely wrong with the map, unless you left out details like "oh yeah it is 8x8 on a world a million tiles on a side"  :P Glitched embarks with gaping infinite chasms happen.

"next year there will be better and cheaper computers" SandyBridge has been a big expensive flop.

sandybridge is THE reason to buy a computer now. Something better will be out in a month/year but you will be very happy with the price and performance.
