I'm against paying for post-secondary, as well, but that is something we can come to when we come to it.

As an Ohio student who is graduating with his associate's degree at the same time as his high school diploma, I can tell you it is a pretty awesome system. Aside from saving a metric crapton on gen-ed classes when I go to college (PSEO classes are all free if you don't fail), I didn't have to put up with high school teachers who are questionable at best. This year (senior year) I didn't take a single class at our high school, but went full time PSEO. Even in a comminity college, the subjects are covered more in-depth and there is a much larger range of classes to choose from. Or in summary, this is one of the few good things about living in Ohio.

Success on a goal! I've got my nice, shiny new books and am reading away.
However, I found out that I have to do some geography work, what with locating classical civilizations, continents, oceans, about 30 different rivers, and some 15 mountain ranges and a lot of deserts. Goal: 4-5 days.

In a way where secondary education is achievable by people of all income brackets and is paid for through taxation. Ergo, what we already have. Did you/do you attend private school? I know a few people who did, and they seem to have gained this mythology that public schools are inherently trash. They're really not.

If we want better education, it boils down to improving what we already have, not creating an educational class structure.

Improving what we have? what we have is a lack of focus on any specific agenda. School is more like a rack of brochures. That is to say, alot of the pamphlets contain information you don't need to get where you are going.

It's not trash but it's not efficient either!

It's general education. You don't specialize until post-secondary. Specializing too early seems like a terrible idea, at least to me, judging by the skillset of some of the best and brightest we have running about, blowing themselves up at my university.

Just to make this clear: I think the debate can only really be had by people who have finished high school. I don't say this to be ageist or anything, but simply because we don't actually realize what use our high school years were until we are done with it. I considered it all to be fairly useless too, even though I did specialize in a chosen field during my junior and senior years.

Got a lot of my reading done! Map work, unfortunately, has been a failed goal. However, my new goal to replace it: Grow a pair when dealing with the dealers I know.
