It's my goal to actually make a goal and stick to it.

Stop watching LeoLeonardoIII's avatar. Seriously, that thing is addictive. I just can't stop staring at it.

Damn. Now I've gotten the same problem.

Imagine if it actually looped properly instead of cutting to the beginning ...

It kind of hurts to watch it, since the flow isn't quite right, but nonetheless cute

Jump to 3-kyu in the November kendo test.  Only problem with this is that I hear guys don't like chicks who can beat them up  :-\  Practicing kendo at that level involves a rather large amount of dense muscle (plus enough stamina to run around stabbing things and screaming for three hours straight).  Oh, well.  *stabbity*
That sounds undeniably awesome. I think maybe you wouldn't want to be with the kind of dude who has insecurity issues and has to be stronger than you?

@Vector: When you scream in kendo, you only give them warning of their doom. Scream in their face as they writhe on the ground after you sneak attack.
I don't know about kendo, but in karate the shout comes just as you strike / block / move / whatever. It helps with the timing to match the change in stance and other body motions, and expels air so you're not a balloon if you get hit, and helps remind you to breathe regularly, and tightens your muscles for the motion you're doing, and scares your opponent at just the right moment, etc. It's not much of a warning, unless your face changes right before the shout.

I got a black belt without ever doing the screaming thing, I just never saw the point. I suppose the things you said could help, but if you forget to breathe during a fight you have bigger things you need defending from. Like yourself.

Make a hybrid Roadwar 2000/Wasteland game in Inform 7 using simple graphics.

Look into finding a job that helps out the homeless, and if I can land it quit my current job working in corrections.

Buy a nice little house.

Not just the ears, the entire thing, including the paws!

Actually, if you do it right your opponent will stop in his tracks and cringe.  I've gotten some really good hits in that way.

I hear that my kiai is like getting blasted with a wave of aggressive intent.

Probably not, but that doesn't keep me from being insecure ;)  Eh, I think I just need to accept that I'm never going to be normal--but on the other hand, I'm only 20.  It's a bit silly to be thinking about this stuff right now.

For kendo, you usually shout before launching any major offensive.  The purpose is to stun the opponent and gather your own energy; you also shout when making any attack whatsoever.  Kendo dojos are surprisingly loud.

All I can say is, you should try it. It's like taking water breaks while working out. Sure it makes you feel a little funny in the beginning, but there's a good reason.

And you get to yell loudly at people without having to explain why, which just sounds fun.

@Realm: You aren't done with school yet? What crazy system are they putting you through man?

@Aklyon, Leo and Vector/ the kendo and karate topic: I guess it is just preference and style. I am an unflappable dude, so my opponents found the shouting rendered their rank and skill worthless. I suppose that yeah, you could scare people pretty easily, but why invoke fear when you can cause pain? I guess I will start screaming during any fighting. Is there a set thing to yell, or can I just do non-sequitur insults? "SHITBEARS!" "LOVELY SHOES!" and so on?

Screaming at the enemy is an effective way of breaking morale. If you're not screaming at your enemy in a fight, whether it's martial arts, or swordfighting, or charging the Persians, you're doing it wrong.

I think it's easy for us to forget this in a world where our weapons do the screaming for us.
