I lolled when i found my magma vent has started slowly overflowing, and is slowly moving towards the edge of a cliff, which drops directly onto the traders route. if the lava keeps going it will start flowing down the light shafts into the royal burial chamber. my mayor was standing in the middle of the flow cleaning something yet he managed to get out alive but chard  :(

I discovered that flying enemies can attack you even if they are twenty z-levels above you.

Soon after I discovered I somehow counterattacked it.

Soon after I discovered that flying enemies that are stunned cannot fly anymore.

Finally, I learned a 20 z-level fall manages to break EVERY part of the body.

When I realized the programmer had used actual rocks, actual geology concepts when designing the game.

And seriously? When I realized it was generating the history of the world ... and the Elves didn't make it to 1050 :P

Took me a while to dig up this adamantized thread... but it's still my fav. :D

I recently had a small 'mishap' with a classic windmill I was constructing,
it had 3 doors at the lowest floor and was fully enclosed, when a piece of masonry fell down
due to some misunderstanding in the construction plans
(...Noo! It needs to be alunite, you! Undo this NOW!)
The pleasant surprise was that the 3 doors were blown from their frames by the blast!

As a bonus crushing the newly arrived tax-dwarf noble who was just passing by to inspect the farms.

ah! but wagons can fly, anydwarf knows that.

or did it really move as a creature at the site itself to get to land?
I didn't think the owned wagon could move.
And your dwarves must have had some swimming skills.

Not really a discovery since it was obvious, but once I was building my first watchtower and hadn't caught on to how to do it right, and I was using scaffolding ramps....once the tower was done I disconnected all but one of the sections attaching the ramp to the tower, and then sent a dwarf to remove the last one...it all came crashing down in a huge cloud of dust and voila, a bunch of neat piles of wood were there waiting to be hauled. Beats the heck out of removing each section one by one, waiting for dwarves to do it in between.

Coolest discovery? Finding natural ice caves in the middle of a glacier in adventure mode.
