... though note that Knights in the Nightmare is also a Sting game :P Takes a bit to crack open, but then you're in this wonky bullet hell SRPG and things are marvelous.
Oh god, is that the game with the hour of useful tutorial mode next to the story?
I... don't think so? Don't remember it taking an hour when I hit the tutorial in the PSP version, anyway.

They've been kinda sorta mentioned already (not specifically, but the overarching series) but Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 1 and 2 for the GBA are frickin' AMAZING. Personally I preferred the first one but they both kick an incredible amount of ass. They're only GBA games, but I can say with no hesitation they're both probably in my top 10 of all time. Hell, the first one might be in the top 3.

Seriously, Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 1 and 2.

... the third one on the GBA has also been partially translated and is, imo, better than the first two, at least mechanically. It was good enough I actually got a good chunk of the way through it before there was any translation done. Did eventually give up because holy hell it takes away from things when you have literally no idea what anything says, but... still.

This is a really unique RPG. It's just great in general. I like that the adventure starts when the father throws his son (the PC) out of the house, which is a nice alternative to the standard Wake Up Crono intro. The music kicks ass as well.

Just remember to take it a BIT slow, and don't leave your tanks unattended in caves or outdoors. Leaving your tanks in bad places can get them needing a wash, and there's only one tankwash in the game, so you end up with a crippled tank till you get it there.

Ehh... I kind of really, really dislike the design for the main character(s) in the third one, though I really should give it a try at some point since I loved the other two so much. I believe that the second one was mechanically better than the first, but the story line of the first one drew me in oh so much more.

It's just first impressions, but looking at the Guardian Beasts for the third one, they seem a lot less... Entertaining, than two specific ones from the other two games. Sugar and Dinah were hilarious, and the second actually had a pretty good character arc if my memory isn't failing me.

Still, I'll give the game a shot. I didn't even know there was a third one...
Do you know the rough eta of the translation patch?

On PSX, look up SaGa Frontier. It's a seven-armed jrpg with some neat characters that travel in spaceships and actually learn stuff in battle.

I don't think there even is an ETA :P

From what I can tell, it's one of those where (almost) everything is translated, but the folks working on it are having trouble with (getting somebody to do) inserting stuff. Last update (v8, which does a little bit of script and much of the menu etc. stuff, iirc) was in april, with possible release activity coming again in the next month or two, but final release day... no one knows, heh.

SNES: Chaos. Freaking. Seed. Needed to get that out of my system. That game is gorram amazing.
I can't wrap my head around this game. Can you give me some general tips? So far it's awful tedious running around the rooms and stuff and I don't really understand the mechanics too well.

Posting to watch, because this thread has a ton of great suggestions in it and I'm not going to remember it otherwise. Unfortunately I don't really have anything to suggest, mostly because people have already suggested the games I've played. Oh well.

Anyone who likes a good story should go play 999, I'm surprised no one recommended it on this thread but I've heard great things about it before on TBFP's podcast. It's a Puzzle/Horror game for the DS, extremely anime with some tired tropes you'll quickly identify but quite satisfying to play in spite of it. The premise is unique to anyone who hasn't already read a Deadly Game anime/manga, the story is fun, layered and mysterious. One thing that might put some people off is that the puzzles so far are terribly easy, I haven't got stuck once yet and I've already completed one playthrough (the game has 6 endings which require you to go back and pick one of the other branching paths you didn't choose, I heard some of them are actually fairly hard to get).

Anyways! So my next big question is: what are some great SNES, GBA, DS, PSX horror games I should try out? Try to avoid the most obvious franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill because I've played them all, I'm looking for stuff I haven't heard of!

Here's some of my recommendations:
Hell Night (PSX, first person adventure game, pants shittingly scary, almost as bad as Silent Hill 1/2/3 for me, don't let the awful and confusing opening 3D FMVs put you off, its not often a horror game makes me want to stop playing)
Scratches (PC, very neat point and click game with a really engaging story and actually decent reasons for the MC going inside the spooky house and staying, at least at first)
King's Field (PSX, a first person action game with an emergent story that you discover through speaking to NPCs and item descriptions, made by From Software and considered a predecessor of Dark Souls for reasons immediately clear when you start the game and turn left instead of going right and get OHKO'd by a gigantic killer crab; the shitty Runescape 3D graphics, unique enemies, legitimately intriguing backstory, oppressive atmosphere and punishing mechanics combine to make the game a very tense and spooky experience, you can never once afford to let your guard down lest you be clouted across the head by flying bladefish or shish kebab-ed by skeletons waving pointy swords)
Deception III (PSX, third person action game with very unique mechanics, difficult to explain; basically you set traps for evil jerkasses who want to impale you on things)
