To me fog gates make a nice "I haven't been here yet" marker, so I went down the path that didn't have them.

Answer is yes: you can sparta-kick him into the pit without ill consequences. (no death, no aggro)

Oh you silly-billy, I'd only kill him if he didn't become a merchant. If he lacked wares, well...we'd have a problem.
