Other Games / Warlocks / Waving Hands
« on: June 04, 2016, 09:31:08 pm »
Didn't want to Necro a thread from 2009, but I did want to bring this back up because it's a lot of fun (and, self-servingly, because I want people to play with). Here's the original post:

http://games.ravenblack.net/

This is an amazing game of bluff and strategy. Each player is a Warlock in a duel to the death, casting spells by sequences of gestures on each hand. Proffered palm, snap, point, wriggle fingers casts "Charm Person", and Point, Wriggle, Wriggle, Point, Point casts "Lightning Bolt", so you can chain them to cast both in 7 actions rather than 9 since the "point, wriggle" overlaps. And you're using both hands. And there are counterspells, and fire elementals, and cause light wounds. But you know what would make the game even better?

A larger player base. Check it out!  And remember to summon the ogre at yourself and tell it to attack your opponent, don't summon it at your opponent or he'll control it.  (spiel cribbed from maknud)

There is a good strategy guide here, for more complicated tactics than the basic instructions on the game's website will give you: http://minmax.ermarian.net/refuge/

You can invite "quinnr" to a match, if you want. The website is a lot more...dead than it was in 2009 or so, but still running!

Fun fact, the game was originally written by Richard Bartle, who is super cool and also made the original MUD.

Play With Your Buddies / Bay12 Plays Drawception (Picture Telephone)
« on: January 05, 2016, 02:53:21 am »
So, Drawception is a neat little game of online pictionary-telephone. Basically, each player either draws a picture based off of the previous player's caption, or writes a caption for a picture that will be used as the subject for the next picture drawing. If that makes no sense, then here's a random example completed game to gaze upon. I've been having a lot of fun with this the past few days, and thought it might be neat to set up a Bay12 game. You don't need art skills, and it's a pretty quick game. If you want to check it out, you can click the link below to join the Bay12 game that I've started:

So, I know people typically loathe Kickstarter posts, and I'm not a huge fan either, but I'm making an exception for this one. I mean really, all you have to do is watch the trailer (link to campaign, too). It's already at 3/5ths of its $50k goal, and there are 28 days left, so I think it looks like a pretty set thing.

But yeah, basically the game is just about survival in a city as a dog who's been abandoned by his owner. They've got a ton of fancy looking features planned, including:
  • Difficult moral decisions, do you beg or steal in order to survive?
  • Meet other dogs! Some of them will probably attack you!
  • A living city with different neighborhoods and different activities at each place. Figure out who puts out their garbage at what times!
I for one am highly excited for the chance to be a depressed dog.

Other Games / Town of Salem (Quick Online Mafia)
« on: March 09, 2014, 02:04:28 pm »

Recently found this while searching through Kickstarter for interesting things. It's a pretty neat game, a browser adaption of the Mafia/Werewolf party game, with a couple small changes. For those not familiar, Mafia is a party game in which players attempt to vote to lynch a hidden group of mafia members that assasinate the townspeople one by one. It's a pretty strategic game, and mafia games are played on this forum somewhere, too!

Town of Salem is a browser adaption, and the games go very quickly. It's basically the same game, except players get some final words after they die, and the game goes very quickly, giving a very short amount of time to discuss voting and such.

The game is currently in Alpha, but very playable. There is a kickstarter going on to finish it, which will add a lot more customization and vital features like playing with friends instead of just random people. Oh, and you currently are forced to use Facebook integration to log in, another feature expected to change if the Kickstarter succeeds.

(You miiight have difficulty filling up a game depending on what time of day it is. Last night I had constant games starting, but around 3 today it took a few minutes.)

Other Games / A Sword Game
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:22:55 pm »
A Sword Game is a small flash game by the creator of the game Starseed Pilgrim (which is actually a really cool game, and you should check it out). There is an article that can probably explain it better than I can (or you could just open up the game and see for yourself, but I'll try. Basically, you are a completely incompetent knight with a sword. If you get too close to a wall, your sword goes flying. If you hit a tough enemy, your sword flies away too. Sword fell down a grate? That's pretty sad for you. Good luck going anywhere though, since your sword is also the key to open up all of the doors. It's an insanely frustrating game, but also pretty neat, and good for killing a bit of time. Check it out!

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play Organ Trail (Forum-input Driven!)
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:07:54 pm »

Organ Trail: Director's Cut is a pretty awesome parody of Oregon Trail. It's quite similar, except for filled to the brim with zombies. I was in the mood for it, so I decided to dig it up and run an LP of it, because what could be more fun than having to put down fellow bitten forumgoers? D:

This first post is a bit long, and follows the introduction that goes exactly the same each time you play, since there are a few different inputs to get out of the way. Any questions in this post that need to be answered will be in bold! This post is a bit screenshot heavy as the introduction is long! As an aside, if it says "Quinn" in any of the text, it's because I needed to put a name in to continue the intro. You can make it whatever you want.
Spoiler: Brains? (click to show/hide)

After this, the real game begins. But first, to recap, we need to decide:
The names of our five travelers.
and How to allocate our twelve points towards supplies.

Other Games / Miriani (Sci-fi Space Combat MUD)
« on: October 29, 2013, 10:32:12 pm »
There were a few posts interested in this game after I posted about it in the "How did you last die?" thread, so I'm making a thread for it here.

Miriani is an online, text-based multiplayer game in which you take on the role of an aspiring starship pilot in an attempt to fend off the alien Praelor threat from destroying humanity. Or be a pirate, salvager, or partake in a number of other activities. It's an open-ended, free for all type setting.

The game revolves around the piloting of starships, and is a completely unique system from any other MUD you have ran into before. Combat (and travel) takes place in three-dimensional sectors of 20 by 20 by 20 squares (Screenshot), in which ships are completely free to move around, giving pilots the feeling of actually being in space. Battleships have multiple stations that need to be manned in order to combat effectively, meaning that missions are regularly carried out with over six to eight people all working together on a ship. It is mostly skill-based, with less of the typical RPG views on skill levels and the like. Instead the game focuses on reflexes and logic to challenge your skills.

There are three different factions that you can be a part of, but it's difficult (and highly expensive) to switch alliances after you create your character. I'm currently in the AIE, but I won't give away too much In-Character information as the game is roleplay-enforced (with plenty of chances for out of character discussion if you look for it). I always show up to help new pilots when I see them, so you'll probably know who I am! (My name in-game is Brian).

-----
A couple notes for new players:
  • There is currently a bit of wild interference going on in many main sectors. If your sensors are acting wonky, that would be why.
  • Immediately after starting, type "color" and set different colors for General Communications, Private Communications, Talking, Room Title, Exits, and Chatter, at a minimum. As a game with a majority of visually impaired players, these options aren't on by default.
  • Type "help getting" for a bit of a text-dump guide on how to get your first ship and other essentials.

So, OpenTTD came up in a thread recently, and one thing lead to another, and now a sever has been set up for Bay12 forum-goers to play together. It's pretty casual right now, while things get going. I've put up a typical little map, along with the ECS Vectors addon, to make the markets a wee bit more complex (Everything but Towns and Houses, check out the flowchart), as well as a script to make towns require resources to grow larger.

To join in the fun:

Quote
Server adress is Djohaal.zapto.org
Password is herp256
use TTD nightly r25755

Put the server address in the Add Server box when you click Multiplayer, and enter the password. Make sure to use the specified version of OpenTTD or you may have issues.

General Discussion / RWBY (Web Series)
« on: July 28, 2013, 03:11:11 am »
RWBY (pronounce "ruby") is a new fictional animated web series following the the story of four girls as they attend a school and learn to fight monsters using the abilities granted by a magic substance known as Dust. It is 3D, and the characters are done in the anime style. It's a great series, and can be watched online here: http://roosterteeth.com/archive/?sid=rwby&v=more
For an independent development, it's quite amazing what they've managed to do with it in the two episodes that have been released so far. I don't have a ton to say, but I highly recommend you check out an episode at least. There have been a few posts about it lately scattered around the forums, so I figured I'd make a thread for discussion about the series, since I've enjoyed it quite a bit so far.

Other Games / Humble Bundle (w/ Android) 6
« on: June 18, 2013, 08:21:03 pm »
Some pretty cool games this time round, including Aquaria, Fractal, Organ Trail (GREAT GAME), and Stealth Bastard Deluxe. Also Frozen Synapse and Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars if you pay over the average. They are all on Android, but at least a few of them are also given to you for Linux and probably other operating systems, which is awesome for an Android Bundle. Check it out: http://www.humblebundle.com/

I'll put some info up here about my thoughts on the games as I play them, soon.

Other Games / Reprisal Universe (free 24 hours)

http://download.reprisaluniverse.com/

Looks to be an interesting game, don't know much about it yet but it appears to be an RTS game and available for free in a promotion from that link if you give them your email address. Will add more info once I get a chance to play it but wanted to post it while it is still free. The art is really nice, too, like the style.

Other Games / Candy box !
« on: May 05, 2013, 05:33:06 pm »
Picked this game up today, it's...much more than meets the eye.
It is one of those games that really shouldn't be explained too much before playing, as most of the fun stems from learning your way around.
(Hint: 60 candies is where the fun starts.)

This is a game that is an exercise in creativity and logic. The games rules begin very simple: players can propose and vote on rules, and not much else. It is up to players to create an awesome game themselves! You can find some basic info about the game here. The basic rule set here was created with these original rules and some changes inspired by other web-based nomics to make it fit for a forum. Feel free to join in at any time by posting "I'm in." and begin to propose some rules.

Other Games / HackWars
« on: April 30, 2013, 03:17:15 pm »
Spoiler: Screenshot (click to show/hide)
http://www.hackwars.net/

HackWars is an online multiplayer game that puts players in the role of a fictional "hacker", running scripts and programs from a virtual computer to steal, trade, and play with other players. The game is pretty unique for its genre, mainly because of the awesome "HackScript" system it contains which allows players to actually write small scripts to have different effects when run in the game.

There is a lot of both NPC and PC interaction in the game, so whether there are many players online or not, there is still fun to be had. A clan is currently being worked on, it costs a large sum of money to put one up, but we'll get there eventually! In the meantime, feel free to ask me if you need a particular file, I can probably find it somewhere and share it with you. There aren't many players on right now, but the developers are still active and working on creating "Hackwars 2", which should be out sometime relatively soon.

Other Games / Starseed Pilgrim
« on: April 21, 2013, 03:15:02 pm »

Starseed Pilgrim is an indie game about...well, I'm still trying to figure out what it's really about, but so far I'd say it was about learning and exploration, with a dose of pretty music thrown in. It's hard to explain the game without spoilering too much, since a great deal of the game is being thrown in the middle of it without knowing what the heck you are supposed to do. The website says the following, though: "You are a gardener, tending to empty noise and empty space to fill them both with colour. You are a refugee, building your own world away from the spreading darkness. You are an explorer, discovering new places, new rules, and new fascinations. The universe is bigger than you know."
I highly recommend you try it out if you can, it's a great game so far...there is a trailer on the website showing basic gameplay, but not much else. It's hard to even find spoilers on the game if you look, since pretty much everyone agrees that the fun in the game is learning what to do with it yourself.
