I think you guys are confused. They are selling to you when you buy. When you sell it to them, then you get the money.
Which means the S is the cost you are spending

Break into sheds until a nice, sturdy wood axe (or other weaponiseable tool, such as sledgehammers/mauls, or even better - both combined in a wood maul! ) is found. Look for sacks and stored food and alcohol at the same time.

Because why waste hard earned money when you might need it later?

Anist's also up for some bandit hunting. Find out how many bandits the elf thinks there are and how well equipped they might be.

How do mercenaries work?

They act as guardian companions that work for you temporarily. Of course if they meet their end, feel free to get a refund. They were terrible mercenaries anyway. They each get their own turn in combat and will act on your commands, depending on speech. They are mercs after all, not maids.

Matthias looked around after he had bought everything. The sword was just too expensive to buy, not like it was his style. He decided to see if he can find some work that might earn him an axe of some description. Woodcutting might be a good start, as much as he wanted to help take down the bandits.

How long do mercs stay with you?

Depending on what you are doing.

Such as traveling to another town that is connected by road, then they stay with you until then. Adventures-wise, if they are really hurt, they may even just run away, but until you complete your mission or return to town. They can also carry you back to town should you get badly wounded but are not dead. They also require food and water though and the common merc only has enough for about one-two days worth on any given time.

However should you obtain other followers these can be permanent or temporary as well with different rules. Such as, you can bring your wife and kid along. But you have to feed and water them. etc.
