Diagnose my abject terror, if you please
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:30:22 pm »

Now, before i divulge any other details, yes, I know it's improbable, that most geeks of my age have an (un)healthy obsession with it, and that it's not bloody likely. Wait, I said that, already.

Welp, i don't know if it's the sudden influx of cold weather we've been having or some other factor, but suddenly i feel terrified that global thermonuclear war is going to break out any second.

I am absolutely certain from a logical standpoint that it won't happen, but that is doing nothing to mollify my emotions.

this feeling has been hounding me for the past few days, and i hate it, but i don't know what to do about it.

Even if you have nothing to say about it, i'm just glad to know i got these thoughts out here others can read them, 'cause it's not healthy to keep them bottled up.

FAKEEDIT: I really hope that these aren't legit premonitions, oogy-boogy and unlikely as that may be.

I propose that you express intent and loudly request to God, angels, aliens, Jesus, or whoever's listening that this please not be allowed to happen. We don't want it.

How about making a list of all the nice things that may come about as a result of a thermonuclear war? That should help ease your mind.

I'll even start you off:

1) Since there should be a massive loss of life, that means more Twinkies for you.

It's probably a side effect of the fluoride the government puts in the water to control our minds.

I've found that when I can't convince my emotions of something with reason its because I don't really believe my reasons.

Its kinda confusing to think about at least for me, but thats why it was able to develop into a problem.

I suggest you carefully think about how you actually feel about your reasons why nuclear war wont happen.  IE 'the government isnt stupid enough to nuke everyone' may not really convince you.

There will be one coming... in the internet, if the bill gets passed.

So, I guess you're not too wrong about it.

As for a real one, I doubt it. At least, not in this month.

At this particular moment, nuclear war capable of escalating to levels of global nuclear war is incredibly unlikely, though the risk will rise over the next few decades. All nations capable of retaliation with ICBMs and other easily usable weapons are at present stable enough and wary enough of MAD that MAD will not occur. Current worst case scenario is a nuke by a small unstable nation is smuggled into a major nation and provokes a response, possibly nuclear; though even in that case, it would be unlikely to escalate. There just aren't antagonistic superpowers at this point in time, as was previously the case with the US and the USSR. The US, Europe, and Russia have enough domestic troubles to prevent much saber rattling; and China is pretty content with the current state of affairs. All the others have ability to spark regional conflict, but just don't have the long range missiles to engage in a global nuclear war. And so, for now, the powderkeg remains damp.

I think the prospect of a nasty war is becoming less unlikely as the crisis rages on, with more people becoming desperate, and conflicts becoming tenser. I don't think I need to point out what happened the last time things became this bad (Hint: It involved an Austrian guy and lots of black Hugo Boss suits)
