One time I went searching an asteroid belt for a ship...

and I found the ship and they gave me some scrap and were very happy. Not even a single damage.

The most crazy thing happened today.  I docked at a refuelling platform and - get this - it offered me fuel in exchange for scrap.
Pfft, that's nothing. I once sided with the mantis fugitive and he DIDN'T damage my hull!

Prior to the AE I would always side with him because if you side against him he sometimes kills one of your crew.

Come to think of it isn't the Charge Ion strictly better than the Heavy Ion?  The charge ion can hit for 2 ion damage in 12 seconds instead of 13, and also has the option of firing for 1 or 3 (relevant because it lets you get through 1 shield faster or save the ions for a point where you can actually get through the shield).  It's also better at getting around Defense Drone II.

They didn't kill mine either! (permanently, at least)

The first time I ever encountered that distress, (Before AE, of course.) I helped them. None of my crew died and all was well.

The second time I ever encountered it, you could imagine my surprise.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Heavy ion is one of the worst guns in the game.  It will sometimes accomplish more than a single ion blast MK 1, but ion blast MK 1s are rarely used on their own anyway so its a worse deal.  Both of them are largely useless unless you get a second ion gun, at which point they become amazing but heavy ion is still the least efficient of the bunch.

Is the artillery beam supposed to have good aim? I got the slice and dice achievement when it did a perfectly straight cut across the five rooms of an auto scout.
I also got 2 fed achievements in that run and got myself Fed B :D

I think it just cuts a horizontal line across two random rooms.

When it hits auto assaults it will sometimes hit the leftmost and rightmost room, and only those rooms.

I know Heavy Ion is bad, but it's weird that it's both less efficient and less flexible than another gun with the same power requirement.

Yeah, there are a couple of inefficient guns like that. Burst Laser Mk I vs Dual Laser, for instance. The Dual Laser is just flat out better (although I don't think I've ever seen it for sale).

Maybe they're more for use by enemy ships to make them weaker?

What is funny is that storywise the Burst Laser MK 1 is flat out better... and the Dual Laser is for poor people who are desperate to have weaponry.
