In defense of shotguns, just because conventional weapons aren't as effective against the aliens doesn't only mean they are better protected against penetration. It's perfectly possible the aliens physiology has a lot of redundancy and can take a lot more punishment before failing. They are modified with genetic engineering and cyber augmentation to perform well in combat, so a spare organ or two to fall back on isn't that strange a thought. You can even dabble in making your own soldiers more robust by giving them a second heart using meld.

Started my first ever Classic difficulty game off to a good start. Three promotions, one wounded, and all meld and artifacts.

Ah, gotcha. Author should probably update the description in that case, otherwise people might see the "no EW" and move along.

Well, it is just the beta. The official release might not be for some time, though the beta looked stable enough when Beaglerush was streaming it.

Also, normally I wouldn't give a warning like this, but do not fucking underestimate Long War. Long War is to X-Com what X-Com is to Harvest Moon. Occasionally you'll get Sectoids, normal Sectoids with six health and Low Profile.

Huh, noticed something interesting just now.

I was playing through a new Marathon Classic Ironman campaign and was in the Portent mission. One of my soldiers panicked as things started going south and decided to shoot at the escort target. He did 3 damage, which should have been enough to kill the escort, but the guy lived with 1hp. I think they patched it so that your own guys can't kill escort targets anymore. Very nice of them, as that was always a really annoying thing to have happen.

Incidentally that soldier's name was Shankar, the same name as a really annoying co-worker I once had. Despite having really good stats he screwed up quite a few times and almost certainly cost me the mission. I spent the whole mission thinking to myself "I knew I shouldn't have brought him! Or at least renamed him!"

As it turns out my mods go disabled again and that start was horrible anyway, so I'm going to just delete it and start over. I don't mind losing portent, despite the loss of some very good soldiers, but the combination of Japan only giving me 50 money and some very lackluster abduction rewards due to High Stakes meant that game was pretty much toast. That and I'd rather have my mods in place.

So I finally got Enemy Within at a sale, and it's been fun so far, right before I got called to do the final Triad mission I got my first MEC, and yeah she's basically a really nice walky/shooty wall of 8 free hit points (which coincidentally always wear down exactly 4 per attack so she never has to recover at sick bay).

Pretty fun.
