You have to find the fusion cores when you raid a downed battleship to get them, and it's entirely possible to beat the game without encountering a battleship.

Ah, that must be it. I don't think I ever saw one before I beat it.

Yeah the battleships do come pretty late, I took down the temple ship before it. Wasn't even trying to be quick.
Alternatively the triad defectee story arc features an early game battleship you get cores from.

The battleships don't come "late". They literally only come if you fail to intercept another UFO, and have the entire world covered in satellites.

Basically what happens is the aliens see that they can't do abductions anymore (because you are monitoring EVERYTHING), and are launching a scouting mission to find a satellite of yours. If the UFO succeeds and leaves unmolested, then the next UFO to come will be a Battleship, on a mission to shoot down your satellite. If you shoot down every UFO you see, you'll never see a Battleship outside of that one Slingshot DLC mission.

Oh. And here's me thinking that the loading screen meant if you left a UFO alone, then that UFO would shoot down the nearest satellite.

Are you sure about that? They do turn up to take out satelites if you fail to take out the scouts, but I thought they also pop up randomly later in the game, albeit rarely. I'll see if I can verify.

Here we go
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Note the objective is terror mission, not to hunt down the satelite. Naturally I didn't let a scout get away before that.

If they do, it's so late in the game that I never saw one. Maybe they will skip the scouting and go straight for the satellite if you don't have Stealth Satellites researched.

Does anyone happen to know how changing stuff in XComGame.int will affect the game's interaction with Steam? A cursory net search hasn't turned up anything of note.

Yeah, I beat the Slingshot DLC arc in my first run of EU, that's why I got them then, but in my current run, I ended up failing the battleship mission because literally everyone was in the hospital except for 3 squaddies.

Guess what? 3 squaddies are not enough to take on a battleship. I tried.

How do you get the DLC, anyways?

Alternatively, you can go out and buy a copy of Enemy Within for the Xbox at $12.99, and have everything.

But then you'd have everything for the X-Box.
