I could see the aliens doing this quite realistically. From the alien perspective, it's a win-win. Even if X-COM suspects a trap, they have to show up and get shot at. Otherwise a major piece of infrastructure is destroyed and the country targeted might decide to pull funding.

Seems reasonable to me.

TerroristsAliens blew up my buildings.  I'm gonna pull funding from X-Com, the underfunded and only organization equipped and trained to fight the Aliens.
Maybe I'll fund my own anti-alien force instead.(It never materializes.)  Or maybe submit to the TerroristAlien overlords in fear.

Sadly, that also sounds realistic.

If pulling funding from the organization (which never showed up to help/utterly failed, mind you) would get the hyper-advanced aliens to give you and your citizens a break, would you do it?

I mean the war is primarily XCOM vs. ALIENS after all

No the war was mainly against the world against the Aliens.

By all means the Xcom served as sort of strike team

Also the reason countries pull funding has always been ambiguous. It could have very well been that they have been comprimised by aliens.

In the first game, countries would make alliances with the aliens if they didn't trust XCom to keep them safe. Said "alliances" involved human sacrifices, of course, as well as not funding XCom.

I always assumed that the X-com acted as a specialist force designed to investigate/research the aliens in an attempt to find a way to end the war and the actual fighting was usually done by each country's own military forces. If X-com fails to perform it's reasonable to expect a country to decide it's money is best spent on it's own specialist military outfits.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Presumably the cut funding went to abstracted defense forces. I mean someone cleaned up those terror missions I kept putting off, because eventually they went away. X-Com was just better equipped and able to do so than normal armed forces.

More importantly, perhaps, X-COM knows more about what they're dealing with. Regular military are presumably kept in the dark as much as possible to avoid security leaks.

I can imagine that.

"Sir, what are we fighting?"
"Terrorists son"
"But sir, they look like giant insects and on the last mission that thing laid eggs in will"
"We...Are...Fighting...Terrorists."
