Advancing via overwatch is when you have one element moving while being covered by a second. Lift-shift just means change targets and I believe bof is short for Base of Fire.

I think so anyway :)

Pretty close, Kashyyk. Lift-shift fire is when your suppressing element moves a little and fire just to one side of the target area, so that the assault element doesn't get shot up when they're going through.

I'm thinking that it's better to assault through the village quickly, while they're still all messed up by our firepower. Don't give 'em time to shake off shock and prepare fun for us.

Okay, so it looks like I've got 1st Squad, then(?). I'm looking over the map and working out how I want to deploy.

Ed: Will I be starting flat along my edge, or will I be able to deploy into the closest 1/4, 1/3, or whatever of the map?

Also, is the elevation on the hill enough that soldiers on it could fire over the surrounding trees?

You can deploy anywhere in your half of the map.  Enemies will enter from the opposite edge.

Yes, figures on the hill can see over the trees.  You can assume people on a steep hill like the ones on both maps can see anyone on the map except people concealed in big terrain features, like tall grass or woods; people within two inches of the far edge of a building; and people in cover.

So basically you'll go in and I'll fire to the side of -what target spot in the village?- and then you pull out and we go in?

Okay, I've worked out how I want to deploy:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dark Red is my LMG, Orange is my Grenadier, Yellow/Gold is me, Lime Green is my junior NCO, and Teal/Cyan are my riflemen. I've labelled all of them with their names and ranks as well.

Time to fail miserably!

By the way, I'd like to request a flamethrower for my squad. Napalm is fun.

They're placed.  Enemies will enter from the north.

How do you want your guys to react to enemies?  The position they're in means they'll be able to fire pretty much whenever they want and unless one gets jumpy (When an enemy enters your line of sight you roll 2d6 against your rep.  Depending on how many of the dice are below your rep, soldiers may start shooting whether you want them to or not, or they may hold their fire as long as you want.) you could let them get to any distance you want before you start shooting.

You can tell them to start shooting as soon as they see a guy, or let them get whatever distance closer you want, or whatever, really.

I'll order the men on the left flank to open fire on sight. The men on the right flank, including myself, will open fire on sight. The rifleman and LMG on the hill will open fire on sight, and the LMG will concentrate on tightly spaced enemies and enemies attempting to cross the road. The Grenadier will concentrate his fire on enemies in the house and elephant grass, and will refrain from firing on enemies within 6 tiles of friendly soldiers.

(Also, can I have a summary of the general equipment available, or can I just mention it as it comes up, within reason?)

What equipment do you mean?

Everyone has grenades, and grenade supplies are abstracted.  You can assume any figure who needs a grenade has one.  The Junior NCO has a radio he can use to call for support.

That was mainly what I was wondering about, thanks. So basically, grenades, knives, and the junior NCO has a radio, and anything more logistics-oriented isn't really something I have to worry about.

I just noticed it's kind of hard to tell what's going on.  Your guys are on the bottom and their token borders are color coded so you can tell what they are.  There are also little squares on the tokens to show various things about them.  You can't tell though, unfortunately :C.  Well, you know who's who.

Turn 1 Summary:  A local VC soldier walked right out of the tall grass, and Private Thornton opened fire, scoring the first confirmed kill of the mission.  Another VC ran out of the grass in an attempt to get to the house and was cut down by Private Odom.  A third VC opened fire into the woods from the grass with a PPS, grazing Private Thornton and knocking him down.  He's okay though, the PPS is really weak.

Private Thornton gets up and dusts himself off, then reconceals himself.  No further shots are fired from the enemy.  PFC Campbell moves up to put the house in better range of his grenade launcher.

There's obviously more VC out there, but you can't see them and you have no idea how many there could be.  What do you do next?

Sgt. Taylor advances along the marked line (gold) to the marked point (gold), and halts, returning to cover.

Cpl. Copeland fires two bursts into the area of grass marked with the red box.

PFC Campbell fires two grenades into the marked locations (orange dots), the first to the location near the house, the second into the elephant grass.

All others remain in position, watching for enemy movement.

Nothing happens on January Mission 1 Turn 3.  Both teams roll too high to act.

Spoiler: Turn 4 and 5 (click to show/hide)

PFC Campbell fires a grenade at the elephant grass but misses.  Cpl. Copeland recons the marked area by fire but doesn't expose anything.

Turn 5 Campbell tries again and successfully puts a grenade in the elephant grass but doesn't appear to have gotten anybody.  A VC soldier comes into view in the western doorway and Private Thornton shoots him.  Another one, getting away from the shooting to the west, comes into view from the Southern doorway and is taken down by Private Jackson.

Okay, I'm gonna be honest.  This isn't going to work.  I thought I could run the game this way because it worked fine for ATZ, but ATZ is a much simpler game.  This is just too much to run the way I'm doing.  I could get four or five turns with quality screenshots for each action in a turn per update, but FNG has too many pieces to do it justice.  I could see it working if people actually got together on maptool for it, but if that happens I'll probably end up doing it with the X-COM ruleset I'm working on.

Sorry, I didn't anticipate the complexity of FNG compared to ATZ.  I'm gonna have to call this one off.
