A mini-synthesizer is probably the most fun ever. And it is totally not hard to learn.

Being a sax player for the past 9 years, I'd say saxophone.  I'd recommend starting on alto sax (though if you ever plan on learning clarinet as well, it is recommend to start on clarinet then learn sax).

If you go guitar, and portability is a concern, they DO sell smaller guitars - good for those like myself who spend months at a time touring foreign countries. In fact, there's a class called backpacker guitars, built with portability in mind.

It really depends on what kind of music you want to play.

For melody: flutes are nice and portable and come in a wide variety. They are generally pretty simple to play. Piccolos and fifes are ultra-portable, but less versatile. Ocarinas can be fun (but will probably forever be associated with Zelda), and there are all kinds of regional variations on the instrument like the xiao.

For harmony: for portability and ease of playing it's the guitar-like instruments all the way. There's a lot of variation in them, ukeleles and mandolins are small, but require finer motor skills to play, banjos are strange (their basslines are plucked on a high pitched string) but are generally tuned to open g, which is pretty simple to play in, and of course theres the standard guitar, which comes in 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 size models.

For rhythm: tambourines are fun and easy to play and portable, but you might get branded a hippie. Bongos are less so, and you might get branded a beatnik, but they're fun to play also. You might try goblet drums as well, they come in a variety of sizes, but are bigger than bongos, but they have a much wider variety of timbres and are still fairly portable.

Get a jaw harp a.k.a. "Jew's" harp (although it has absolutely nothing to do with Jews, go figure)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have one and it takes about 5 minutes to figure out, makes a cool sound too, especially in the hands of a Norwegian.

Play with human nerves. I mean, well you know what i mean.
Guitar is cool but its hard to pick up and needs patience
Drums are cool but not portable, if you mean drum kit.
Flute is pretty easy and portable, and so most of wind blown instruments.
Violin creates tones of sadness and doom, its probably hard to play, but i dont know.

And the chinese violin thingie is easier?

(I'm not particularily leaning towards violins, for the record. I'm thinking that I'd go for guitar first, for that matter, as we have a good acoustic guitar already -my father's-.)

I'm kind of leaning towards flute because it supposedly isn't too hard, and it seems quite portable. Portability is kindof the keypoint in this, I think. More portability and concealability, more chances that I'm lugging it around, and more chances that I'll dedicate it some time...

The mouth harp thing isn't what I had in mind, TBH

That one doesn't have quite the same expectations of intonation and sound quality, in my admittedly limited experience.
