I think I just lucked out.
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:05:07 pm »

So here I am playing half asleep, carving out a new 'lazy omnistockpile' when I don't realize I clipped an underground pool.  It worked out pretty good.
I guess the water has some limits to how far it can spread, thankfully.  Dumb mistakes kill more of my forts than anything else.

If you edit the d_init.txt file in your game's data/init subfolder, the game shows water (and magma) as numbers, indicating the level of fluid present, 1 through 7. Handy in situations like this.

You should try this for a stupid mistake, rivers flood when it rains like a murky pool. Now, with my fortress located inside a large dammed river... When it rained for 2 months on and off...

I love water.

Yeah, you should really play with fluid amounts shown, I honestly don't understand why that's not on by default.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?
Cave adaption.

Probably, and I just lucked out hardcore again.

I got sieged by 20 goblins.

Two crossbowmen dwarves decided this was not cool.

They went out and solo'd the entire siege in leather armor and with iron weaponry.  I am currently erecting a shrine to this incredibly stupid act of heroism.

I don't play with it on, and I do fine.

Dwarves passing by get good thoughts from the mist of water and exploding felines.
Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

I read the ASCII better than the graphics packs

I also use the default tiles. Fluid amounts isn't a graphics pack feature, it's an init option, and I don't think anyone said you couldn't play without it, but you're severely gimping your ability to accurately work with water or lava if you don't.

Yeah I know, I was gonna get around to it but I'm lazy.  As I am still working out different methods of playing I haven't needed to work with fluids yet, this was an accidental swimming wading pool.  Was just stating I like ASCII more than graphics packs.

Guess I should've read the wiki before designing that entire river drain.

I'm thinking about deliberately flooding my fortress and having my dwarves drink it dry :D
But yeah. Building in the middle of a flood plain is !FUN! for insurance companies.

Just so you know, 2 squiggles is too high for a dorf to stand in, and 1 squiggle is safe to walk in (but not to build or work, and it'll cause 'could not find path' spam).
