Cyclops as Guardian, plausible?
« on: November 30, 2011, 10:26:04 pm »

Whoah, It's me again. I gotta stop asking questions. Anywho, recently a cyclops wandered onto my map, and promptly got caged.  Can I use a restraint to hold him infront of my fort so he bashes the socks off of any creature that comes near? Or will he just sit there uselessly.

I don't think you can chain invaders or untamed animals. And even if you could, a cyclops would in all likelihood be able to destroy his restraint.

Other than that, he should try and fight other invaders. I saw a cyclops and a bronze colossus do that on two separate occasions in my forts. But a cyclops is by no means invincible and would not fend off a goblin siege on his own. In my case he got swarmed by trolls and was killed before scoring one or two kills himself.

Hmm, I'm probably going to atleast try. It lets me chain him, but I'm scared he will just break free and bash the dwarf who tied him.

Edit: I guess this whole endeavor was useless as when I tried to chain him up my dwarves went and stood by the restraint and idled, doing nothing.

You can definitely chain hostile creatures.
Invaders (i.e. from ambushes and sieges) will cooperate as they are led to the restraint, and once they get there they'll just run around randomly as they try to escape to the map edge.
Thieves, wild animals, and megabeasts, however, tend to immediately attack the dwarf who is leading them and cause a job interruption, at which point the creature escapes and/or wreaks havoc.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I don't remember ever trying and sort of assuming you couldn't. I'd still expect this to end badly seeing as how a cyclops should be able to destroy buildings and shit.

artifact restraint should be immune to cyclops powers. Also if he will attack do this:
build this structure:
Code: [Select]
####
#rC^
####
#-wall,
r - restraint,
C -cage with cyclop
^ - cage trap

Then tell your dwarves to chain your cyclop. if he tries to escape - he will got into the cage trap and you will be able to try again.
Eventually dwarf will restrain cyclop before cyclop runs amuck, then deconstruct cage by pulling the lever attached to it and remove walls.

I have used similar design for automated elefant-breeding meat plant.

Nice, Nice. Well I'll try this as soon as I can deal with the semimegabeast megabeast sitting infront of my fortress doing nothing breaking doors and dwarves. Why are all these enemies gravitating to me within weeks of eachother?

Well I gave it a try but my dwarves won't even move him to the restraint, so I can't even get that far, thanks anyways.

Trap him in a room and make invaders go into said room.  Or just make a cyclops zoo.

So...he scored one or two kills after he was killed?

Undead cyclops guardian ftw.

Perhaps you could turn this cyclops into an amusing way to kill off animals, invaders and useless dwarves? :D
(Maybe even danger room train it to legendary O_O)

As much as it may appear otherwise I suck need more expirience.  A lot more.  Okay now that I am done sounding arrogant I see two options.  A super cruel death pit nice underground colosseum to pit retarded thieves and the like against this cyclops, and record the battles in a little book and see how many foes it can strike down.
...
OR, I can figure out how to put him in a room and force invaders into that room, maybe a 1 z-level drop from a drawbridge into a pit? Ideas?

I sorta like the arena idea more, recording his amazing victories, or unlucky end.

Build his cage in desired location, release with lever, drop into arena with retractable bridge, job done :)

Yes, been thinking that.  Well I have a nice smasher and 12 cage traps infront of my fort so I doubt I need a cyclops guard.  TO THE ARENA!

Edit: I feel like I'm doing too much posting, not enough losing fun.
