Today has largely been claimed by cleaning the bathroom, but I have set up my embark profile and I will play as much as I can. I opted to save a few points by embarking with Ambusher/Marksdwarves, for the crossbows and the hunted food. Similarly, I'm bringing no food of my own; there should be lots on site, both when the hunters bring it in and lying around.

I will update further when events occur.

And so old mistakes are corrected, and new mistakes are formed.

From the diary of "Keldane II" Snarledbasements, Expedition Leader of the Axe of Scorching:

3rd Granite

We've been here such a short time, and already this place is turning on us. We heard whispers before we set out, but I didn't believe them - tales of countless spirits haunting the greatest fortress our kind have ever created. Tales of charnel halls so expansive, the dead would forever outnumber the living. Tales of the corpses of thousands of invaders lying on the doorsteps.

It was all true.

Several ghosts were waiting for us when we arrived, and two more just rose. One appeared near our wagon, and the other... well, I'm not sure where he is, but his unearthly howling is unsettling on the deepest level.

We brought some booze, but I don't know how long it'll last if the only way to get some sleep is to drink ourselves into unconsciousness.

Were those whispers... Loud by any chance?  8)

Also, stay away from the ghosts. They have some advancing tendencies...

*facepalm* I hate to say it, but I actually found that hilarious.

As for the ghosts, so far I've discovered that it appears some don't even appear on the list to be slabbed. I'm not surprised.

Oliolli, you're keeping my dwarves up. Quit your howling!

So have you actually made it inside the fortress alive?

I'm sure you'll find something destructive constructive to do with your turn.

Oh, Keldane can you get your dwarves to see how much of the axles and waterwheels survived?  I know I said i was going to abstain from helping, but I expected this cheap dwarven trick of engineering to survive and give you loons overseers a free source of unlimited stable power to do things with.

Nooooope.  Stable.  I figured out a cheap easy way to get completely stable power with a waterwheel.  I won't tell how I did it till Keldane finds it, or at least the remains of it.  The entire time I had it running, it produced a constant 6000 uW.  Never fluctuated once in the 4-5 decades it was running.  Honestly, I'm surprised no-one else has done it, or at least mentioned it.

You built a row of waterwheels on an aquifer didn't you?

Oh god, I hope those dorfs don't mind my mad cackling overpowering that other ghost's howling!

This is the list of what's died so far in our attempt to reclaim this Armok-forsaken fortress:

Three Overseers
Twenty-six dwarves
One Yak Bull
One Alpaca, Baby
One Forgotten Beast, answering to the name 'Sox'

You forgot all the FBs I killed?  :-[

Ugosh Pulpyraunch the Sunken Cysts
Meli Frigidrogue
Thoth Puzzledlie the Mine of Deceivers

Oh, and one doe rabbit.

Because I did that too after reading something on the wiki (i think), just to provide an extraordinary amount of power to a pump stack from the magma sea. Never completed the stack but the aquifer did provide 100% stable power.
