Batman Arkham City
« on: November 22, 2011, 12:02:53 pm »

Just wanted to say that I am pissed. The game runs well, looks and sounds great and is fun. My life just got a little harder since the industry decides to drop 6 great games on us over the span of 60 days and now I have to decide what to play.

The gameplay is improved upon over the last iteration(didn't think it was possible). Of note are the more varied attacks and compelling opponents. Anyone else here playing? I got my copy with my video card.

damn it, man, what do you expect? it's a month before christmas, and the industry has already started grinding its gears. i am not currently playing, because i am not in possesion of enough money to purchase the game, and i think it might become a slideshow with my average computer.

I finished it on my PS3.  It was great.  :D  They put in so many Batman villains that the comic book nerd in me was fully satisfied.

I didn't do all the Riddler challenges this time though, simply because there is a ridiculous amount of them and some of them are pretty tricky to get.

Waiting for the PC version to be released. Did they improve on the "X-ray" vision of the original? By that I mean, is it still optimal to play 90% of the game with it active? Because that is the only thing that I disliked in Asylum.

I'm in the same boat as most people, too many big games to play. Arkham City comes sometime after Skyrim, but possibly before Dark Souls and a few other things.

This was also one of my biggest qualms with Asylum, it's such an incredible waste of graphic resources when you end up seeing the entire game as what is essentially a single color with varying shades. You actually have to turn it off just to see what you wish you could be seeing all the time. I guess it's probably not a big deal for people that aren't anal retentive about finding every little hidden thing though. Wish I was one of them.

Ok, what the hell Games For Windows Live. You ask me the serial TWICE, then you want to load my profile or you wont save the game. Fuck that.

Then you need an update, asking for a game restart and possible computer reboot.  All that on a steam-enabled game.

That was exactly why I didn't get it for the PC.  Graphics may be better, but the hassle isn't worth it.

A thought occurs to me as I sit down to play this.

And it's that a consumer wanting to play a AAA game has to deal with more security and encryption than a low to medium level government official, if you count every game password, serial, game account and database we have to interact with just for security credentials.

I mean seriously. Steam DRM. SecuROM. GamesForWindowsLive. James Bond didn't have to pass through this many gates to see Money Penny, why the hell am I having to just to play a video game?

My CD-key is a four party agreement to let me play this game, and if even one of those companies folds, it's a huge damn headache. Let alone if I'm ever without internet, god forbid.

It's just funny that as I sit down to legally play a brand spanking new AAA game, I've never felt piracy has more moral legitimacy than now.

Yah, the first thing I thought when I saw Securom I was like 'geez really, it's already on Steam' but thought nothing of it, entered my serial. I just about lost my shit when I heard the GFWL login noise.

I haven't had any of the tech problems (well, besides the universal bug that makes it basically impossible to play with DX11 on at any reasonable speeds). Enjoying it a lot despite the annoyances getting going.

Not being able to remap controls in game is, while not un-expected, still annoying. I'm a habitual tweaker. It takes me an hour to settle in and play after I've set things up. So every time I get a new gadget that's gonna want a hotkey...welp...exit the game.

This is definitely, again, a semi-rushed port job. I did some key remapping then started reading the in-game move notes (which is on the same screen as the equipment loadout screen.....?) and half of the read something like: (unassigned)(unassigned) -> w,a,s,d + (unassigned). Glad to see that extra few weeks delay really paid off >.>

It runs like butter on my machine though. Solid 40+ FPS. Almost feels like it's running too damn fast, if that tells you what kind of FPS I usually expect out of my system :P

For the actual game, it hits you fast. The intro was pretty cool but felt a little rushed, and then you're just getting spammed by information when you have control.

Combat seems way easier already. Not having a sloppy counter completely ruin your flow is amazing and I'm so glad they did it, it was the first thing I noticed. Feels like there's a lot to learn, even though much of it is what was in AA.

Also, I'm such a derp. This whole time I thought the game was set in Gotham. When I realized it was a "prison city" within Gotham I both felt disappointed and a little stupid for only realizing now what the game's title meant.

Finished the main story on the PS3. Haven't done all the sidequests and other stuff yet, as I just got AssRev in the mail (AssRev was a bit awkward at first since I kept trying to batclaw my way around Istanbul...)

Was gonna say. Arkham City doesn't just give Assassin's Creed a run for it's money in the free running department....it almost feel like it invalidates it. Sure, AssRev is more realistic because Batman moves around like a human UFO at joint-snapping velocities...but god it feels good to move around that quickly over distances that great. And not in the prototype "2 minute drift" between buildings...but getting there RIGHT FREAKING NOW with the bat grapple.

Once I got past the key binding, I've kinda just gotten lost doing dozens of Riddler puzzles. Haven't even done the first mission. It's glorious just having bad guys scattered around that you can choose to engage at your discretion. Tired of trying out the Riddler Challenges? Go whoop someone's ass and feel like a god.

The Riddler Challenges are also a lot better this time around, IMO. Still got a few puzzle one in there, but now many of them are more like skill tests. Which is kind of like a puzzle while you're trying to figure out how to do it. But they keep you engaged because you're doing stuff instead of staring at a room trying to figure out what's amiss.
