Well, I have found a number of freaking AWESOME sites along this river so far. One has a huuuge abundance of magnetite but no flux, one that I just genned has tons of cassiterite, galena, and marble but no natural iron (goblinite would work), plus an abundance of river-dwelling creatures including platypus-men/women and alligators (said map started out thawed). All of these maps have huge vertical cliffs, which seem to be a feature specific to The Great River 'Babyseize'. Babyseize is also chock-effing-full of waterfalls created by smaller rivers cascading into its canyon.

For your convenience, here are the worldgen parameters, so you can explore and find sites of your own. I'm going to keep looking to see if I can grab one that has iron + flux + other metals, and if not I'll probably go back to the one I just explored with the alligators (for breeding purposes, naturally). I've been going with The Hatchet of Reverence as my civ, since it has a pretty good amount of materials available for selection.

I think I'm going to rename this topic to reflect the fact that it's now about a really freaking awesome river.

Also, here's a picture of the general area of Babyseize I've been checking out:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, Babyseize is characterized by huge cliffs. It's like this for pretty much its entire length in this region, as far as I can tell, so I'm assuming it's the DF equivalent of the Grand Canyon. If you want to look for a cool embark site, the best way to do it is just to look for a point of flat land (aka 1's and 0's) jutting out into those sheer cliffs.

Oh my. That's quite an awesome valley.

Valleys are easily abused in the 'flood the world' department...

Are you sitting on a frozen river?  I have only seen rivers create cliffs like that.

Can you get a save file for it? (I had a look but I don't see if you can get the file?)

Also it definitely looks like a major river that's frozen, move those dwarfies asap! :P

Wow, I've never seen terrain formed like that. Are you between biomes or something? Did you turn off erosion?
Cliffside fortresses are fun. I've only been able to find them when mountains and lakes are adjacent.

Yeah - looks like a deeply eroded river canyon.

Looks like FUN! especially if it's a dry riverbank that floods every season.

I see snow, I think. Could you have embarked on a massive river that will thaw five minutes into play time?

It is indeed a frozen major river. It's also right between several settlements (I think they were human, can't quite remember as I genned it at 2:00 AM this morning when I was groggy and barely conscious). So far it's mid-Spring and there's been no thaw. I also don't remember what climate this embark was on, though I'm assuming it was 'Cold', given the fact that my dwarves haven't plunged to a watery death yet. I've managed to get most of the supplies into the small dwellings I've dug in the side of the north cliff-face, where I intend to set up the temporary fortress. I'm thinking that eventually, once the fort grows enough, I'll build a huge complex built into the canyon, with lots of narrow walkways spanning the various platforms suspended above the river. I don't know how much metal is available on this map (I suppose I should check prospector), but there's definitely flux and lots of trees, so between that and goblinite a steel industry is guaranteed.

I'll upload a save and worldgen information sometime today. Right now I intend to drink a lot of coffee and play Dwarf Fortress.  :D It's the first day off I've had in a week.

Nice. I only had one class today, because my Computer Science teacher canceled today's lecture and lab so we could work on projects (which I finished forever ago), so I've been relaxing all day as well.

A man after my own heart.

This looks like a spectacular embark. I'd be wary about having those narrow walkways exposed to the open air, though... goblin bowmen tend to take advantage of such designs.
