I generally see races stick to their own kind (blacks marry blacks, whites marry whites), and it's out of free will. So maybe the ponies have something like that going on. Oh god, now I just made myself think of unicorn supremist gangs, and earth pony proletarian gangs

Posting an excerpt from my futurefic I've been considering writing. "Pen" is the main character of the fic, and Trixie's little brother. Things happened, stuff exploded, and now Pen has brain damage that cuts off conscious access to most of his magic, as well as making him somewhat emotionally volatile, and he blames Trixie for reasons you may be able to figure out from reading the story. Trixie moved to Ponyville about two years prior to this, but made a few visits in the preceding years, the first of which was to try and make up for her abysmal first impression. She currently works with Twilight on her magical research, as well as putting on the occasional magic show for the young ones.

Time difference: 12 years.

“Aren't you going to give your big sister a hug, Pen?”

Pen scowled. “I'd prefer to keep my distance, thank you.”

“Oh, Pen, how cold!” Trixie stepped forward to embrace Pen anyway, but he retreated just as much. The blue mare pouted. “Is that any way to treat your family, little brother?”

“I suppose not, but I consider it a perfectly acceptable way to treat the pony who ruined my life,” Pen hissed, glaring coldly. Trixie almost visibly deflated.

“I suppose you still haven't found it in you to forgive me, then.” She seemed almost humble, but this flew right over the younger unicorn's head in his anger.

“FORGIVE YOU?! How could I forgive you? If you hadn't been so damn prideful I might still be able to do more than move a quill! Your overconfidence only cost you your reputation, and you've even managed to salvage that, despite all odds! It cost me my future!” He snorted derisively. “Oh, but of course the Great and Powerful Trixie can fix everything! The Great and Powerful Trixie can do ANYTHING she wants, right?”

Trixie looked to be on the verge of tears. “Please... Please, stop. That's all far behind me now. I'm not great, or powerful, or anything anymore. I'm just Trixie. I just... I want to fix my mistakes.”

“YOU CAN'T FIX EVERYTHING!” Pen's voice rose even louder. “YOU CAN'T FIX ME!”

Shaking in anger, the grey stallion galloped away in the direction of the Everfree. Trixie simply stared in shock at her fleeing brother, tears pouring down her face.

Make sure to do a lot of your writing in the present tense. "Pen is crossing the bridge." "Pen is baking a cake." "Pen is penetrating the enemy defenses."

+1. Except for the Apples, there probably isn't that much impetus to keep country matters in the family.
