As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

In all honesty an application for easy and efficient military drafting, equipping, and scheduling would be really quite nice.

I approve of this idea.  If I could do it, I would.

What's wrong with the in-game military screen? It's easy to use, at least for me it is.

The only problem I ever see with the default screen is that it lets you assign squad members from another squad, which can mess up a carefully planned group of soldiers.  Use of Therapist to assign nicknames can solve this, though.  If only Therapist allowed you to mass nickname...

I usually give them custom named jobs (squad 1, squad 2, etc) in Therapist, since job names are shown when you select personal for your squads.

Custom professions are wonderful for that, yes.  You can select a squad and then set their mass profession to "soldier" with hauling disabled and gathering wounded enabled, for example.  Makes handling soldiers much easier, at least for that part.

Yup, I do the exact same thing.
Right now I use this form: [Weapon_name]_[squad number]
example: Urist Spear_1, Obok Axe_2

I do that as well. Although they don't keep their old names with me. Soldiers don't need names. (it's an init option)

My main issue with the military screen (among lots of things) is that you can't get to the "unit" screen from the military screen. I'm forever scrolling through the massive list of names trying to find an individual that I have recent found to have a mace preference and rapid healing, but is buried in the middle of the list.

Some extension of "therapist" for making squads would be awesome.

Just give dwarves temporary nicknames in theRapist while you are forming your squad. If you use something descriptive, it is especially helpful.

Something like: Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie or Rarity.

Right, if you give soldiers names, next they'll want you to value their lives.  We can't do that, Urist McSoldierface.
