Titans of Dwarven Industry! (Updated 5/24)
« on: September 11, 2011, 09:48:14 pm »

It's the year 3200 (technology wise, roughly equivalent to 1950). Dwarves have left the Mountainhomes, and have created huge cities above ground, like the humans. They have grown weak from sitting around listening to the radio rather than drinking gallons of booze and fighting. There are only a few tough dwarves left, and they're the ones working the massive factory complexes outside of town.

The Benthammers Forging Complex was a large facility that specialized in weapons of war - tank hulls, cannon barrels, ship armor  plating. Since the Kobolds were completely defeated in 3150, and the Elves have retreated back into the forests, there's not much war happening. As such, most of the complex has been closed down.

It is 2nd Sandstone 3200. You're at the gate at Benthammers Forging Complex at about 500AM. Today is going to be the longest day of your 60 year career as a Dwarven Factory Manager.

This is a suggestion game. I will try to be fair about taking suggestions, but sometimes I may take the first decent suggestion that is made.

As you arrive, the guard Urist Melchrist greets you, "Good Morning Mr... Oh. I haven't seen you before? You must be our new manager. What's your name?"

The guard looks taken aback. He looks at you, and lowers his eyes and mumbles "Yes sir Urist.... I know we aren't doing so well.." He trails off into incoherant babber. You know why this place is failing already! Even the guards are a bunch of wusses! You storm into the lobby and take a look around.

You walk into a cavernous lobby and your footsteps echo as you walk on the yellow-and-black tile floor. This place is decked out with worn wooden wall trim, probably made a hundred years ago. A female Dwarf secretary sits in the middle of the room at a U-shaped desk. She is typing away with a noisy mechanical typewriter.

"Look, guard dwarf.  What's your name?  Cut that kobald impression and start acting like a dwarf.  You there!  Behind the desk, tell me where the shift managers are at and give their weekly reports.  I assume this place has been producing those at least."

You briefly consider heading into the production halls , but at least need to find out a bare minimum of information. You're a professional and have done this lots before, but you need to get at least some support.

"Look, guard dwarf.  What's your name?  Cut that kobald impression and start acting like a dwarf.  You there!  Behind the desk, tell me where the shift managers are at and give their weekly reports.  I assume this place has been producing those at least."

The guard dwarf peeks his head back in from the front door.

"Sir! Sorry Sir! I am.. just... My name is Urist Melchrist, Son of Urist Melchrist and ... "
He sees the frown forming across your face.
"Sir! When you are ready , I can escort you to any area you need to go to in the plant! Just call for me."

The secretary looks up in a bored fashion and the incessant hammering of keys stops. She says "Yeah, production reports? Those were canceled 3 weeks ago. Since the smelting furnace has been shut down in Hall B, they basically can't run anything else. "

She cranes her neck and pulls a small notebook out from one of the cubbyholes in her desk.
"Looks like the only manager that is in office is... let's see.. Geshud Lilkot. He's probably somewhere on the 4th floor, sleeping in his office. His title this week is "1st shift Foreman". I believe he was fired a month or so ago, but none of his replacements showed up."

Order the smelters put back online, and bite the nose off bodily remove the 1st shift foreman. That trash should've been out of here a month ago.

Who fired all the shift managers?  Fire that idiot as soon as we see him.  In the meantime, go check on the ex-shift manager and ask him why he still is coming in.

You can no longer resist the urge to head to the production halls. You have a vague feeling that some of the supervisors are hiding there...

You have entered Production Hall B. This is a massive building containing a half dozen blast furnaces, each roughly 20' tall and with mechanisms for turning them over, and long trenches in front of them for the molten iron to pour into. There are several dwarven men about here, mostly doing nothing. A few men are standing around some solidified steel globs with picks, chipping away at the messy pile.

You find the cleanest looking dwarf and say,
"You there. Are you the supervisor of this hall? Are we not in the business of making steel here, why do all our furnaces remain cold?"

"Sir. The furnaces have run out of material for smelting. Our yards are full of magnetite, but ... well... we're afraid there's something sinister in those piles.
"Sinister?"

"One of the men thinks he saw an Ogre riflin' through the junk..."

Swear under your breath, "I hate those things." Then address the dwarf again, "An ogre? Have you made any attempts to...remove it in the past?"

Order the ex-1st shift foreman to retrieve the ore, along with anyone who looks remotely competent with a length of pipe.

((Production status will need an update.))

"Look bub, let me tell you a little story.  When I got started in this business I was up to my ass in Kobalds every day when I headed to my shift on the smelting lines.  Literally.  Up.  To.  My.  Ass.  It was back in the siege of Sockbanners in the Vale of Giggling and we lost good men every day just getting the goddamn ore in the door to the yard.  But we were in a goddamn war and willing to do whatever it took.  Now you are telling me that a perfectly good yard is shut down because of one goddamn ogre?  Listen up all of you!  It's time to ask yourselves if you are dwarves or elves!  Either get the hell out of my factory or grab a pick and follow me into that yard!"
