Moustachioed Astronaut Knight saves Mad A.I. Princess imprisoned in an asteroid base guarded by a Space Dragon.

Space Dragon? This final boss is Ridley? :o

Well, I guess you can't make the main character Samus without losing the mustache. Unless the AI had a mustache...

I'd still prefer steampunk^^

A post-apocalyptic world, people living underground in big caves, wild robots on the surface, attacking everyone who tries to get out.
And you have to dig UP and gather something important from the surface, like wood or food... or maybe air^^

Are you going to do the artwork? ;)

View shall not be sideview/platformer. Aside from the votes, I never really got why I couldn't just walk around the tubes in mario.

I'm currently working on a view that will allow for isometric tilesets as well as normal (chessboard/zelda/topdown) tilesets.

While some of you are still thinking on background and story, how's the interface? Walk with AWSD or mouse? Interaction with keys or mouse?

for iso, move on the diagonals using WE, SD

click approximately in a direction, mine it.

for zelda, awsd.

Leaves the mouse free, unless we make this key-heavy (which you could)

You could design the levels so that every solid wall is a justifiably impassable obstacle. (Like an actual wall, for instance.) There's no need to have things like the Mario pipes blocking the way.

I think platformers are cool and am voting for side view. I don't actually expect you to drop all your prior plans and do that, of course. Your game, your call. Especially since I haven't actually committed to submitting any resources. :P

As I've alredy said, your character would be implied to actually carry all the rocks out by himself, but you'd not actually play it. You'd just grab a rock, the game checks so there is a path to the surface, and 0.2 seconds later the rock is on the surface and you're where you originally were but now with one less rock. Game play wise it's basically "disappearing rocks costs hunger by an amount depending on how good a path up you have" or something like that.

The original files are not JPEG of course 8) , and are also not enlarged and has no text on it.  I just wanted to show some of it, for which JPEG works very well.

Also, I think the Mad A.I. Princess should blur the line between yandere and tsundere.  Or maybe have a split personality.  But I'll leave that decision to the writers.  It'll be fun to animate her, I'm sure.

One of the reasons why I'm against isometric is that I would have to draw and animate each character 5 times.  Although I guess we could get away with 3 times.

The important thing is to make up our minds, so that we can start working in earnest.

Siquo, you seem to be in charge, so don't be so afraid to finalize the decisions.

Really? I would have thought PNG or GIF compression would be more efficient on a low-resolution image with a limited number of colors. Eh, I guess it could be kind of justified, even if it does make me want to scream.

Trouble with PNG or GIF was that I was not certain whether everyone would be able to see them, nor whether my place on the internet would accept them, and I was tired.

And there was a kind of sick satisfaction to it. :D

I doubt anyone with a browser that doesn't accept .png or .gif files is going to be capable of running the applet in question.

You could, you mean. :D Not my responsibility.

Wouldn't twice suffice? Walk bottomleft, Walk topleft, and for the right side we can just mirror that (WHO WOULD NOTICE?)? Or am I saying something very dumb now?

:) There's gradations. In this case, I don't even want it. I'm just trying to be a referee. I told myself that if we end up with a game I don't like, I've succeeded in listening to others.

What I'm Doing:
Well, still just working on the basic game loop and framework, actually. Learning a lot of language in the meantime (WHY can't you array generics? Oh because generics SUCK that's why FUCK YOU JAVA), getting to know the intricacies of the language (FUCKFUCKFUCKYOUJAVA) and just getting the feel of (What MORON made this shit up? WHY, man, WHY??) how it all fits together.

If you simply mirror the sprite, you'll be switching the character's weapon hands and their appearance. It often doesn't look as good as you think it would.

Also, could you publish the source during/after development?

Java was very deliberately made the way it was for a lot of obscure and pedantic reasons. The exception is unsigned integers. These were originally intended to be in the language, but at some point they forgot that and retroactively decided that the reason they were not included was to not confuse developers.

I bet you miss the .net framework now, buahahahahaha!
Wait, what were you using before, c#? I'm guessing that because working with such an awesome language then going to Java inspires this sort of rage.
