Yes I know the reason and I know it is based on Neal Gaiman universe (I think... )  :)

....the math comes out to like $5 a story. Which the writer in me wants to go "that's fair" but the gamer in me goes "that's 8 minutes of content you just paid $5 for, moron."

Yeah, true.   But most games with stories (non procedural sandbox or hacknslash) can similarly be reduced to a few minutes of story.  once you factor in all the grind though, those 8 minutes are really padded out.

This reminds me though ... I think someone made like a 90min film of the major plot content of Full Throttle.   Minus a few fight scenes.  Was awesome.  Can probably find it on YouTube.

Actions per day games are horrible. I always want more.

That having been said, I love this setting. I've played the crap out of Sunless Sea. :)

The vocabulary, ambiance, and lore of the setting is just beast.

On that note, when you've kinda....exhausted all the words FL has to offer, remember lots of cards/some storylets have rare results. One thing I dislike about FL is how its primed me to click through shit. I love the setting but once you've read it, you've read it. And then comes the Clickening.

I've been playing for a bit, and while I've generally been antisocial and content to read stories in solitude, I may need some help. I've managed to get my Nightmares up to 8-1, which is to say I'm only holding on from insanity by the comforting effect of my goldfish. So, who can I offload some nightmares on? I'm SenseiB12 in game.

I have some nightmares, but I'm planning to visit my menace location anyways since I'm kinda somewhat past the part where I bother to grind. I'm "Objective" on there.

E: actually i slept away most of my nightmares, so yeah, I'm all ears for nightmare reduction.

Scandal is increasing, for some devilish reason...
What can I do?
Don't want it to go up 8, it says bad things may happen, and that's scary.

Bad things are part of the game, enjoy them.  You can always recover from them when they occur, even things like death.

You can most reliably reduce it by going to your quarters and choosing the "attend church service" card.

This has the added bonus of boosting your connected with the church (which you can later spend to get other connected.  I dont care about the church, so I'm always using opportunity cards to sell them out in favor of hell or spies or tomb colonies or whatever).

In most games negative things are purely detrimental.  Here they unlock new stories, though they can be a little grindey.

At some point there are stories that require you to travel to the various bad places, I think there was a point where I needed to raise my scandal over 8 so that I could go do something... Though I can't remember what.

You definitely want to max out each of your menaces at least once. Maybe you can skip on Nightmares. Some things require you to visit the Royal Bethlehem Hotel, but I wouldn't really recommend it for a casual visit. It can have some, in the context of FL, fairly unpleasant repercussions.

It's worth one trip just to say you've done it, but probably not worth going back.  Memories of Light are not that hard to come by, and those let you skip the RBH entirely.  the MM's are a much better place to go, and even slightly beneficial.

Nightmares are hard to get rid of.  I was mixing my watchful tasks some of the Dangerous activities that force you to grind, since Time in Bed can also help with nightmares.  If you were just focused on watchful activities though, there isnt a consistant way to lower nightmares.  You're going to end up going somewhere, unless you can wait for them to cool off or if you can afford to medicate the problem.

I generally stopped having nightmare issues once I discovered heavy drinking at Ms. Plenty's Carnival. Although it can eat up a large number of actions buying tickets, getting drunk, hoping it reduces your nightmares and then going to Church afterward to wash away the Scandal.

Still beats being paralyzed until you get an Opportunity Card.
