The nobles don't like Laythe very much.
Ones a spy, ones a stubborn knight(I mean that in a good way, of course), and one is a chaotic evil bastard.

Kathos was in his lands. Some of his wine had been sold, and now he had 1.4 ducat. It was a good start. The first thing he was going to do was quite simple. His guards were in good numbers, but they weren't equipped well. That was going to change. Kathos decided to buy some material for them (better armor and weapons). Heavy infantry was always stronger than light infantry, and the baron knew that.

The only way to make Kathos go rogue is to say he's going rogue. He swore fealty to Laythe, and now he will stay with her until he dies, she dies, or the queen says he's free to go. Insinuating he is not holding his oath would be challenging him. Quite literally, since he's going to challenge in a duel to death the first person to say such a thing.

Though I'm surprised you aren't going to do what most nobles did. Just keep it, and hide it when any inspection comes. And leave it in your own lands rather than bringing that equipment to Talama if you do bring your regiments there.

Early Renaissance?

Uh, no she isn't. Fairly sure monarchs didn't start spitting in their noble's faces until much later- professional soldiers need to become the norm first (Things remained semi-feudal until firearms became a big thing), along with a strong bureaucracy (if the nobles aren't taxing the people, who is?). Not that there's a problem with that. Indeed, it is entertaining. Her radical attempts to centralize the nation will have interesting consequences. Especially when the nation grows larger and the support of your nobles is no longer optional for keeping your lands in check.
