Hmm... separating the nobility and those who trade as a hard rule sounds rather arbitrary to me, especially when one considers independents or adventurer's who are stuck in the middle, although if this was in place I think you could establish it by having those in charge of Elbreth and/or other countries, in order to gain land or control an army a merchant would have to seek somebody that would allow it. That way the freeform element of the game would remain intact but trader's could still be limited.

If you want to do mine I'm just attempting to establish the first town for Corv in the Weylands and I'm using 2 of the regiments to do it.
Got it, boss.

Ashton: The IG-reasoning is that no character is really capable of managing all that on their own, even with the help of a number of stewards and workers in the business sector. It's just too unwieldy.
I will agree that this dichotomy, combined with specialist rules, does kind of make for a "class" system consisting of Ruler, Noble, Merchant, Adventurer, and Spy.

That is not the EMIA's plan. Any attempt to say that is the EMIA's plan will result in a long and drawn out death.

But really, I can see Kain pulling a plan like that or turning Elberth into russia.

LONG LIVE THE WORKING MAN!!!!
I have got to go make a few propaganda posters...

Kain is drinking alot more then he used to, now that he is the minister of internal affairs.

So how will this work in-game once a character's become too specialized can they no longer change in some circumstances? I mean for example if a merchant establishes a wealthy guild and then wants to create an independent state would they be allowed to profit from it? Would they have to create a new character? How does it all play out and still be fair? I mean in the situation we have at the moment it works magically, just might be a wee bit of a problem when something like that arises.

I'm not Iituem, I don't know. But this is a valid problem, yes, and I think feudalism is the answer. The merchant might technically /own/ the land of his established independent state, but his vassals are the ones managing it (and those vassals will not be merchants).

It's been established that he has red hair and blue eyes, so he's probably fair-skinned. He's on the tall-side, and he's athletic but not muscular. I think a few people have said OOCly that he's handsome, and while I originally had him as "average" I guess I'll make that canon now.

No, im pretty sure i saw it somewhere that its actually specifically in the rules that you can A) own land, or B) Own a business

I didn't ask for a rule clarification, I asked for what would happen if somebody changed they're mind once they either own a big business or lots of land, would they have to create a new character or whatever... ye get zee idea.

Can we buy ourselves into nobility, like they did in say the 17th or 18th century?

If so i think I should have a roll once a year cause my family is filthy rich.

I believe that the things as they are right now are sufficient and prevent overt powergaming. I mean, if my business allowed me to buy a county I would, but that kinda defeats the purpose of the RP element of the entire thing. I think gaining influence with the king or a prince and steering them is much more fun and lets you keep you business while others take care of the grunt work.

Hmm, I shall then kill Granny Mistaris and earn myself nobility for removing the ringleader of the Elberthian crime ring.
