Why is the forgotten beast coming up from the caverns stopped dead in its tracks by a hatch above it, but if the hatch were on the same level it would be able to destroy it with no trouble at all?

however long it takes the nearest furry or drunk dwarf to come along and make cat wo/man babies with them, from there it should take 16 years, this allows them to learn how to read and write, then actually start copying the works

Because Armok demands that the blood flows, and the blood will flow in those lands without any dwarven interference; better they settle somewhere that the blood is not flowing already and get it flowing!
