I made a dwarf!
« on: June 25, 2011, 07:27:49 am »

What shall we call him?

I'm not too sure about the eyes, and the mouth is slightly off-centre, but it turned out OK I think.

Do u gaiz have any opinions?

Eyes are too high up. Faces generally only take up a little less than half of the head.

Why the long face?

Couldn't resist. Probably better than I could draw. But shouldn't this be in the giant DF art thread?

Ah yes, the thread that I somehow managed to completely ignore when glancing over the creative projects forum.

Thanks.

It menaces with spikes of beard hair and has a very small forehead.

You're right.

People are difficult.

Faces are almost as hard as hands to draw realistically. A trick with the face is to start off with the oval and draw a center line vertically based on your desired aspect, then draw horizontal lines also based on aspect for the center of the eyes, mouth and bottom of the nose. You dont want them to be completely straight, but more or less curved. Doing that will help get the aspect right before you put too much work into it.

Also, your mouth might look a little bit better either higher up, or with the nose lower, the spot between the nose and upper lip looks too large.
Ill try to see if I can find a few of the portraits I drew a few years back.

I think one of the problems is that I didn't look at it straight on much while drawing, so the angle I was seeing it from made the head look squatter and more dwarfy/correct.

Well done, nice art.

I really shouldn't have been the first person to say that, even if he does have a bit of a long face..
He? Who says it is a he, though?

Dwarven Science: We do what we must, because, we're bored.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

You are along a good path for the rendering, as you've avoided many of the traps such as outlining the lips and nose. The composition is also interesting as well, especially for a front on depiction of a face. I think that more carefully considering (measuring) proportion would improve this image dramatically.

One thing people rarely do but is really helpful is to actually redraw the same image with the critiques in mind. You've done well with the rendering and form, and I think you could really make this image work by applying proper proportion and placement to it.

I also invite you to post in the engravers guild if you haven't already. It's been a bit slow for the summer but it is again picking up, and it has been a good resource for improving artistic abilities :D

Thanks very much :)

As for the gender... I really should have asked before making assumptions, shouldn't I?

Thanks, I'll try drawing it again. This time I'll make sure to plan where the eyes go.

Also, any tips for the eyes? I feel they came out worst....

For the eyes, I'd say heavier top lip and more wrinkles / looser lower lids. I have no technical advice, though. :p

Eyes are too sharp, you have sort of a sideways teardrop shape on them. The teardrop shape is almost perfect on the upper half of the eye, but the lower half of the eye curves more gently and shallowly. On the mouth thing, I try to make the distance between mouth and nose about a third of the distance between the tip of the nose and the bridge. The drawing is pretty good though, and you should definitely keep drawing.
