Eyes are too high up. Faces generally only take up a little less than half of the head.
You're right.

People are difficult.

Faces are almost as hard as hands to draw realistically. A trick with the face is to start off with the oval and draw a center line vertically based on your desired aspect, then draw horizontal lines also based on aspect for the center of the eyes, mouth and bottom of the nose. You dont want them to be completely straight, but more or less curved. Doing that will help get the aspect right before you put too much work into it.

Also, your mouth might look a little bit better either higher up, or with the nose lower, the spot between the nose and upper lip looks too large.
Ill try to see if I can find a few of the portraits I drew a few years back.
I prefer to start with the nose, then position the eyes, then draw the face outline. Then I start erasing like mad.

Also, I have to say, good shading. Beard is quite scruffy though. Looks like what a hauler's beard would look.

A bit simple, but way nicer than I could draw.

As for the gender... I really should have asked before making assumptions, shouldn't I?

Technically speaking, in vanilla Dwarf Fortress, female dwarves do not have beards. Toady just made it as easy as putting brackets around one line of text to give them beards.

To add beards, put square brackets around the following:

Or maybe there's a god who's just completely insane and sends you to Detroit, Michigan in a new body if you ever utter the name "Pat Sajak".
