Take some of the water. Once you do get back to town, organize a large resupply of the cache.

Both IRL and in the hypothetical, taking the water then resupplying it is not an option because you may not be able to get new water to the camp again in time, not to mention that if the new water bottles aren't in exactly the right place, the other hikers will assume it's not theirs and be forced to face the same dilemma.

Yeah, doesn't seem like a dilemma to me. Take some of the water. Next group in will have to make the same choice, and will have to siphon some from other caches as well, and eventually someone will have a real problem. But unless this is the Grand Central Station of deserts, that should be more than enough time to get back to civilization and get more water to replace the caches.

And I've done some hiking and camel-riding in the Outback. You need water, but it's not like you're being sucked completely dry at all moments. For one thing, after a while you develop a nice patina of fine sand and dead skin which traps some of the moisture. You'll look like you aged 20 years, but it's not that uncomfortable. I actually had a harder time on the Mongolian border, because the air is far more polluted and between that and the loess dust in the air it really dries your mouth out.

I didn't consider taking some of the water as an option, but tbh I don't think it's feasible. When this happened to us, I think the sum total of the other stashes we found was around, or a little bit less than, what our group would reasonably have needed for the next day. In any case, even if there were enough for us to have our fill by skimming a bottle off each pile or whatever, I'd still consider that to be the "take the water" option of the dilemma vs "leave the water" because...well, I can't overemphasize how much you need water in the desert, especially when hiking 18 or so miles a day up and down mountains. Even depriving another hiker of a liter or two could end with them becoming dehydrated, which is no joke.

Anyway, in the real life situation we DID have other options, like waiting till the next morning, having someone scramble up a mountain with cell phone service, call for help and hope someone could bail us out, but the dilemma's more interesting if there's no way to reach help. So do you take the water and doom others, or leave the water and probably doom yourselves not to be able to safely make it to the next stop?

It occurred to me that there's a third option: Wait in ambush for the next group of hikers, kill them, and harvest their bodies. After all, the human body is mostly water. Then you'd have enough water to supply yourselves *and* leave some behind for the next next group of hikers. That's morally balanced, right? Right?  :D

Um...guys? Where'd everyone go?  ???

Take none of it, go back to town.

Could well be someone else has taken your cache, through need or through greed, but they could well have taken your other ones too. Time to leave without dying.

To what I had understood, you you can't go back without more water either.
