I always think Lemmingball Z when I think DBZ games, these days. Been a bloody long time since I've played it, though. Apparently it's still being developed, or something. Last time I fired it up was probably something like '07.

Uhm....HOLY SHIT!

Oh, it's been a while since I played Lemmingball Z too, and about the anniversary collection, I was loking for it, specially because of the Hyper Street fighter guile's theme  :o

There were only two fighting games that I liked - Garou: Mark of the Wolves(a.k.a.Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves) and Last Blade 2. Both are old school 2D games, originally released for Neo Geo.
Very smooth graphics, good music and great atmosphere. Also kinda less button-smashy and more technical.

No, wait, there was one more - C64's Barbarian.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves(a.k.a.Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves) and Last Blade 2

Everyone should play these. If you haven't, do it now. Everyone should also play Vampire Savior, especially if you want to understand anything about fighting game history.

(I disagree that they're any more or less mashy than anything else, though. Except maybe the old MKs and SC)

I mean Darkstalkers 3, specifically, for no reason other than it being the one I like the most (I'm sure that's contentious). Anything in the series works.

You could also try One Must Fall, if for the music alone (it's also a good fighting game and again one that's not as button-smashy)

That's what I grew up on. MK1&2, old Street Fighters. Not to mention Yie Ar Kung Fu on C64.

Gief isn't in SF3. You must be playing Alpha/Zero 3.

Edit: I'd actually recommend Alpha 3 (ideally Alpha 2) over SF3 anyway.

Guilty Gear XX Reloaded on PC is pretty good. On consoles you have to do without the Reloaded part.

The PC version came with a horrible DRM though, so I installed it inside a virtual machine.
