If you can tolerate really outdated graphics, I suggest you give Morrowind a try. I liked it far more than Oblivion. Then again, Oblivion with enough mods gets pretty awesome, but so does Morrowind.

You're also likely to make the game unstable.
Mods aren't perfect.

They definitely aren't. But, with enough care and the right mods, it's definitely worth it.

Lacklustre game in my opinion. Gameplay falls apart if you give it the tiniest push, playing casually is made difficult by rather absurd level sclaing, world and conversations feel copy-pasted over and over, slightly aimless.

I could forgive the rough edges in Daggerfall (part 2 of the Elder Scrolls series) because it was a mindboggingly large sandbox, roughly 10000 times as big as Oblivion with quite a bit of randomisation. The later titles carry the baggage of this approach less than gracefully, and they don't have an excuse.

I've found that a strict system of only and always going to sleep when you need to wait 6 or more in-game hours to have a good effect on handling the level scaling while keeping yourself away from the temptation of never progressing it.

I find that a mod that removes the level scaling (FCOM, for example) works better but hey, I'm weird like that ;) Add in some Unnecessary Violence and Deadly Reflex to fix the shitty combat system (The numbers felt to me largely useless whereas in Morrowind you actually felt like a master swordsman with 100 sword and 100 block xD)...Supreme Magicka to rebalance magic...Choices and Consequences to make advancement in the fighters and especially Mages guilds make fucking sense...I could go on.

And if you want a more casual or traditional RPG playthrough there's a mod called Oblivion XP which replaces the character levelling system with an XP-based one ala Fallout. I prefer it personally (which is odd since I'd have hated such a system in Morrowind...) but to-each-to-there-own on that one.

I like Oblivion and love Morrowind even without mods, but once you go mod you don't go back.

If you get bored of Oblivion and it's vanilla world, try Nehrim. It's a total conversion that adds a pretty good and lengthy questline and a load of other awesome stuff.

I like Morrowind but I find that it's easier to grab a fun looking mod for Oblivion and just jump into it, mess around.

Currently playing Nehrim and liking it. It's more railroaded but I like it that way.

Alright, thanks guys! I'll go take a look at the mods and see how many I might want to include.
As for the add-ons, I might wait for a bit before putting those on, because as of now, the vanilla world is already ridiculously large enough for me to explore.

For Morrowind, a Herbalism mod which lets you pick herbs with a single mouse-click was the total no-brainer for me, once I tried it. Way less clicking and more exploring. I've still got Oblivion in a box set waiting to play one day ... PC death is holding that back though. Actually I have a monstrous collection of games bought on special that I either want to finish or never started, maybe 100? And one of my buddies decided to give me a pile of games he completed, so even more to get through now :/ . Looks like I won't want to buy many games for years and years at this rate.

Surprisingly, oblivion got less fun for me when I installed the Tentacle rape mod.

Oblivion has a mod that adds Morrowind. With all those pretty graphics you love. I'll just put that out there.

Don't hesitate to go into oblivion gates early. You can get some extremely nice magical items from there.

I'm going to try to get Oblivion installed on my craptastic laptop again (I've never succeeded, I played on PS3).

I think that playing all those quests again might be fun.

There are a limited number of gates, though, and the rewards scale with you upon entry, so it's more rewarding to walk in at a high level.

There's two gates that you need to destroy in the main quest (before you happen to destroy them all) if I remember correctly, and honestly that will probably hold you over for a while.

My main issue with Oblivion is that you can totally cheese your way through it without paying almost any attention to leveling and stats, because the AI is horrifically bad, and the Gamebyro Engine was showing it's age since Morrowind. Everything from Morrowind to New Vegas more or less runs off of the same game engine, so if you ever wonder why some of the same kinds of bugs crop up from game to game... Well, there you go.

The main change from Morrowind to Oblivion is that it's no longer possible to miss a shot, or be missed by your opponent; it is the shift from RPG with Action elements to an Action-rpg. I preferred the old system because being a low-level character made you feel like a low level character without any real skill. Your ineffectual flailing with your weapons merely made you tired rather than bring any harm to your enemies, and on the off chance you did hit, the damage was variable and lower if your skill was low. In short, low level characters aren't going to be killing anything stronger than a few rats or wild bugs with any kind of ease until they grow and develop, find or buy worth while equipment.

Oblivion combat could be summed up as, run backwards, cast the fireball spell you're given freely at the beginning forever. This continues to be a viable, working method of defeating any number of enemies, any kind of enemy, until the end of the game.

You still do extremely poor damage if your skill is low in Oblivion. The main difference is that you no longer watch your shots pass through enemies, witch is absurd.
