So I just got Oblivion today...
« on: June 13, 2011, 06:18:48 am »

And I've got to say it is HUGE!

The graphics aren't exactly Perfect World super realistic like, but there is so much content and so much attention to gameplay detail that I am just completely amazed.

I've looked around the main big city and wandered around everywhere, but so far I'm just kinda lost. There are just so many different quests and places to see and things to do that I have no idea where to start.
I've chose a high elf for my character and I'm trying to make him into a combat mage, but I don't really know how I should start training.
Any Oblivion veterans out there care to give a few tips and pointers?

Once you get some practice in combat, there's a bandit cave just outside where you exited the prison. Clean it out and you'll be able to get some quick spell cash. Also, look into mods if you're on the PC. There's some amazing world mods.

If you don't have fighting as your main skill, do the main quest first, otherwise the level scaling will bite you in the ass.

Level scaling doesnt work if you dont sleep.  ;D

Also if you want the best quest in the game, go north from leyawiin until you see the daedra shrine symbol(looks kinda like a fish to me) and go to it. You have to be at least level 2 and bring some lettuce, yarn and a lesser soul gem.

By the way, do you have shivering isles and the other DLCs?

I never had a problem with this. They're always so easy to kill for me.

The one good thing that the level scaling does (and I do mean ONE) is it averts the issue of this scene:

Adventurer: Do de do de do, running down the road at 78 KmPH. I'm so glad I have this nice, light, high-level adamantine armor and dual-weilded broadswords enchanted with a powerful fireball effect and a feather spell that means I can carry twice my weight in potions and equipment. Also I'm a deadric prince, the champion of Cyrodil, Grandmaster of the fighters guild, Archmage, the Gray Fox, Listener for the dark brotherhood, and Holy Champion of the Knights of the Nine.
Bandit: Yesssss, this is an optimal target for me to attack! Mayhaps I shall even make anough gold to buy a proper dagger and not just a sharpened stick! YARR!
Adventurer: Whoops, was that your you that I just exploded?

...Instead the bandit will be equipped with weapons and armour so expensive, he could just sell it all and live a happy, elevated life for the rest of his years ;)

It's a good game, though, noodles. If I were you, I would just leave all cares behind and go wherever your feer takes you. Make the most out of that open world of theirs. That's probably what I enjoyed the most about the game, just roaming around the landscape, roing whatever came to mind.

I keep on seeing this term (shivering isles) in the oblivion wiki, but I still don't know what it is.
Is it a mod or an extension to the game or something else?

Shouldn't this go in other games?

Shivering isles (and Knights of the Nine) are DLCs for Oblivion, they add new questlines and all the areas and items associated with those questlines.

Technically they're not DLC's since you can also buy them offline.

They're expansion packs that come bundled with new versions of the game.

If the level-scaling starts to make the game unplayable, I highly recommend turning the game difficulty down a notch for every level you gain. Damn if I'm not better at balance as a player than the developers.

Enjoy yourself, play all the side quests, just walk around exploring.  If you've never played Oblivion before it is actually pretty fun for the first time.

It's a good game, but the kicker to any Bethesda title is the insanely large modding community.

It's just astounding how moddable their work is (though this property was most likely made at the cost of some other things that would've been good, such as better cinematics), and as of right now I'd say they make the most moddable big-budget games today.

Browse the Bethsoft forums, since a lot of the big ones will be there. Download some mods from TESNexus.

I second the mods. One interesting way of playing Bethesda games is to have the first playthrough as vanilla, mod the hell out of the game, and start afresh to find yourself playing a practically different game. Works especially well with Oblivion, which has had time to grow some rather massive projects. Just be careful, you may drown in ideas browsing TES Nexus...

You're also likely to make the game unstable.
Mods aren't perfect.
