That much money... for rum? Just approved with no debate? That's not a loophole, that's them tearing a hole in the tax code wide enough to drive a truck through. I hope that that tax reform they're all 'waiting for' shows up soon.

Rum? No, not even I like rum that much. I'm betting there's something more...lucrative that they're funding down there.

Hey, rum is very profitable nowadays, what with all the pirates running around.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I was writing a medium lenght post about that, but I lost it on a reload. So I'll do a condensed version:

- There are many legitimate reasons why a woman might want a breast implant that have nothing to do with pleasing someone. People like improving their looks, in general.

- That's not even counting those who undergo these procedures because they've been disfigured (eg: mastectomy due to breast cancer).

- Comparing a procedure undergone willingly by consenting adults to genital mutilation for children trivializes the latter, I think.

Let's also be outraged at the violation of people who get tattoos and piercings done, not to mention more hardcore body mods. The people that worked on Lizardman need to be summarily executed.

She completely blew her article by comparing breast enlargement with female circumcision.
But it freak me out that breast enlargement are common in the states.
It rarely happen in Belgium, luckily but the underlying problem (motherfuching Hollywood give women and men impossible standard) need to be addressed. Unluckily, since it's American movies that are the vector for the disease, all I can do is encourage piracy and hope that those industry dies. And tell peoples not to watch them. I don't know one girl who doesn't have problem with her appearance.

Note that manga have given an even worse standard to some Japanese women.

What? No. American movies are not the cause of this problem. The cause of this problem is that among certain groups, not only has their personal body image gone out of what is realistic, but the whole group's norm on body image has gone out of what is realistic. Which could happen anywhere, and which has nothing do do with movies.

And Japan has much bigger social problems than manga, that is for certain.

I'm sorry, but TV has pretty much dictated what appearance was supposed to be for the last century, and while fashion is to blame for the slim craze, with the "I just got out of Auschwitz" look they ask from their female model, American movies and porno are responsible for the "I need plastic boobs" trends. I don't know why men has been less vulnerable to this, but I'm quite happy I don't feel the need to follow the American standard for men, because just look at how fit and build are the average nerd (let's say Lenard from tbbt or any guys from friends) and you have a problem.

So yes, US made movies and serial are responsible for this trend.

Film and TV are symptoms of the disease, not the disease itself.

Like much in our lives, itself a feedback loop. It is both a symptom AND a cause. A better description, though, would be vector. Television and movies are the way in which the disease is transmitted across cultural boundaries to infect new hosts (and the western hollywood variety is a particularly powerful and resistant strain, though lesser forms of the disease have long existed in many places around the world)

The first article is... just making a completely and utterly invalid analogy and running with it.  There are clear differences in consent and the degree of damage caused by the two procedures(as well as the fact that a fair amount of breast implants are added as part of reconstructive surgery).  And then the next bit of the argument just assumes that no woman could ever want breast implants and runs with that shoddy assumption.  It seems to be a horrible generalization based on the author not being able to imagine anyone legitimately wanting implants.

I can pretty much agree with the conclusion of the second article, but I don't think the comparison to FGM helps the argument at all (the article acknowledges it as an imperfect comparison though).  It kindof comes across as bringing up an emotive but horribly flawed analogy to try and win people over.

And it manages to seem really insulting to women at the same time. :/
